How 5e Point Buy Works

The point buy system in Dungeons & Dragons 5e lets you build a character with predictable, balanced ability scores. Instead of rolling dice, you spend a fixed number of points to raise stats from a baseline of 8.

In the default rules, you have 27 points to assign across Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. You can raise a score to 15 during point buy, and costs increase faster at higher numbers.

Standard Cost Table (5e)

  • 8 = 0 points
  • 9 = 1 point
  • 10 = 2 points
  • 11 = 3 points
  • 12 = 4 points
  • 13 = 5 points
  • 14 = 7 points
  • 15 = 9 points

Why Players Use Point Buy

Point buy is popular because it avoids extreme luck. Nobody gets stuck with unplayable stats, and nobody dominates with absurdly high rolls at level 1. It also makes multiclass planning and feat timing easier because your starting numbers are under control.

  • Fairness: Every player starts with the same budget.
  • Planning: Easier to optimize for class requirements.
  • Speed: Faster than rolling/re-rolling methods.
  • Balance: Keeps early-game power more consistent.

Practical Build Tips

1) Focus your primary stat first

If your class attacks or casts using one ability, start there. For many builds, a 15 in your core stat is worth the 9-point cost.

2) Don’t neglect Constitution

Constitution affects hit points and concentration checks. Most characters benefit from at least 14 CON if your budget allows.

3) Plan around modifiers, not raw scores

In 5e, modifiers change at even values (10, 12, 14, etc.). A 13 and 12 cost different points but give different growth potential once you apply species bonuses or feats.

4) Avoid overpaying for low-impact stats

Going from 14 to 15 costs 2 extra points for no immediate modifier increase. Sometimes those points are better spent improving a weak save or initiative via another stat.

Example 27-Point Arrays

  • Balanced: 15, 14, 14, 10, 10, 8 (27 points)
  • Skill-heavy: 15, 14, 12, 12, 12, 8 (27 points)
  • Tanky caster: 15, 14, 14, 10, 10, 8 (same spread, different assignments)

FAQ

Can I go above 15 with point buy?

No, not during point buy in standard 5e rules. You can exceed 15 later with species bonuses, feats, and Ability Score Improvements.

Can I start below 8?

Not in standard point buy. This calculator clamps values to 8–15 so the math always stays rules-legal.

Is standard array better than point buy?

Neither is strictly better. Standard array is quick and simple; point buy gives more customization. Use whichever your table prefers.
