Alcohol Volume (ALC VOL) Calculator
Estimate pure alcohol content and standard drinks from any beverage size and ABV percentage.
Assumes ethanol density of 0.789 g/mL. US standard drink = 14 grams of pure alcohol.
What This ALC VOL Calculator Does
This alc vol calculator helps you quickly answer a practical question: how much pure alcohol is actually in your drink? Labels usually show ABV (alcohol by volume), but ABV by itself does not tell you how much alcohol you consumed unless you also know the drink size.
By combining volume and ABV, you can estimate:
- Total pure alcohol in milliliters
- Pure alcohol per serving
- Approximate number of US standard drinks
How the Formula Works
1) Pure Alcohol Volume
The base equation is:
Pure Alcohol (mL) = Beverage Volume (mL) × (ABV ÷ 100).
Example: a 500 mL drink at 8% ABV contains
500 × 0.08 = 40 mL of pure alcohol.
2) Standard Drinks (US)
To convert pure alcohol volume to standard drinks:
grams of alcohol = mL × 0.789, then
standard drinks = grams ÷ 14.
So if you have 40 mL of pure alcohol:
40 × 0.789 = 31.56 g, which is about
31.56 ÷ 14 = 2.25 US standard drinks.
Why ABV and Drink Size Both Matter
Two beverages can have the same ABV but very different alcohol loads because of size. A large pour of wine can contain as much or more alcohol than a typical beer. Likewise, high-ABV craft drinks, fortified wines, and cocktails can deliver multiple standard drinks in one glass.
Tracking alc vol is useful for:
- Responsible drinking and pacing
- Planning for social events
- Comparing beverage choices objectively
- Understanding label claims
Step-by-Step: Using the Calculator
Enter the drink volume
Add the beverage size and pick the correct unit (mL, liters, or fluid ounces). The tool automatically converts everything to mL in the background.
Enter ABV percentage
Use the ABV shown on the label. Enter only the number (for example, type 12.5 for 12.5% ABV).
Set servings
If the total volume is shared, enter how many servings it is divided into. The calculator will show both total alcohol and per-serving alcohol.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing proof with ABV: In the US, proof is typically double ABV. 80 proof = 40% ABV.
- Ignoring serving size: A “single drink” can easily be 1.5–2 servings depending on the pour.
- Using rounded ABV guesses: Small ABV differences become significant with larger volumes.
- Not counting mixed drinks correctly: The alcohol portion matters, not just total cocktail volume.
Quick Reference Ranges
Typical ABV ranges vary by beverage style:
- Light beer: 3–4% ABV
- Regular beer: 4–6% ABV
- Strong craft beer: 7–12% ABV
- Wine: 11–15% ABV
- Fortified wine: 16–22% ABV
- Spirits (vodka, whiskey, rum, gin): 35–50% ABV
FAQ
Is this calculator accurate?
It provides a strong estimate based on your inputs. Actual alcohol content can vary slightly by product, measurement precision, and labeling tolerance.
Can I use ounces instead of mL?
Yes. Select US fluid ounces in the unit dropdown and the calculator handles conversion automatically.
Does this calculate BAC?
No. BAC depends on body weight, sex, metabolism, time, food, hydration, and more. This tool estimates alcohol quantity, not blood concentration.
Final Note
Understanding alc vol is one of the simplest ways to make better decisions around alcohol. Whether you are comparing beverages, tracking intake, or planning a gathering, this calculator gives you a fast and clear estimate you can trust.
