How this alcohol drink calculator works
This alcohol drink calculator helps you estimate how much pure alcohol you consumed, how many standard drinks that equals, and your rough BAC level based on body weight, biological sex, and time drinking. It is designed for awareness and planning, not for medical or legal decisions.
Many people underestimate intake when drink sizes change. A large IPA, a strong cocktail, and a generous wine pour can differ a lot from a “standard drink.” This tool converts everything into pure alcohol grams so comparisons are easier.
What you get in the result
- Total pure alcohol (grams): the amount of ethanol consumed.
- Standard drinks: shown in US (14 g), UK (8 g), and AU (10 g) equivalents.
- Estimated BAC: based on a simplified Widmark-style calculation and average elimination rate.
- Estimated time to lower BAC: rough time to reach 0.05% and near 0.00%.
Formula overview
1) Pure alcohol grams
For each drink type:
grams = quantity × serving size (ml) × ABV × 0.789
Here, ABV is expressed as a decimal (for example, 5% = 0.05), and 0.789 g/ml is the density of ethanol.
2) Standard drinks
Different countries define a standard drink differently. This page reports multiple formats so you can interpret results in the system you use.
3) Estimated BAC
BAC is estimated from total grams, body weight, and a body-water distribution factor. Then an average metabolic reduction rate of 0.015% BAC per hour is applied from the time since your first drink.
Why your real BAC may differ
BAC is affected by many variables beyond drink count. Even with accurate drink logging, real-world values can be higher or lower.
- Food intake and meal timing
- Hydration status and fatigue
- Medications and health conditions
- Drinking speed and recent binge patterns
- Individual metabolism differences
Tips for safer alcohol use
- Set a drink limit before going out.
- Alternate alcoholic drinks with water.
- Eat before and during drinking.
- Avoid mixing alcohol with sedatives or recreational drugs.
- Use a rideshare, taxi, or designated driver every time.
Quick FAQ
Is this a legal BAC calculator?
No. It is educational only. Laws and enforcement rely on measured BAC, not estimates.
Can I use pounds instead of kilograms?
This version uses kilograms. If needed, convert pounds to kilograms by dividing pounds by 2.2046.
Does coffee or a cold shower reduce BAC faster?
No. Time is the primary factor. You may feel more alert, but BAC remains elevated until your body metabolizes alcohol.
