Estimate Your BAC vs. Legal Limit
Use this tool to estimate your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and compare it with a selected legal driving limit.
How this alcohol driving limit calculator works
This page uses a simplified Widmark-style BAC estimate. It combines body weight, estimated alcohol distribution factor, alcohol consumed, and elapsed time to produce a rough BAC value. The result is then compared with the legal threshold you choose.
Real BAC can differ significantly from estimates due to food intake, medication, drinking speed, sleep, hydration, liver function, and individual metabolism. So treat this as an educational guide, not legal or medical advice.
Why legal limits are not a “safe to drive” guarantee
A legal limit is a legal threshold, not a performance guarantee. You may be impaired below the posted limit. Reaction time, judgment, lane control, and hazard perception can decline before crossing legal BAC limits.
- Some people feel “fine” while still cognitively impaired.
- Fatigue plus alcohol can multiply impairment.
- Night driving and poor weather increase risk even with low BAC.
Key factors that influence BAC
1) Total alcohol consumed
More grams of ethanol means higher BAC. Large pours and high-ABV drinks often contain more alcohol than expected.
2) Time since drinking began
The body metabolizes alcohol gradually, often around 0.015% BAC per hour (varies by person). Time helps lower BAC, but not instantly.
3) Body composition and biological differences
Two people drinking the same amount can produce different BAC values. Distribution factors and metabolism vary across individuals.
4) Food, medications, and health status
Food may slow absorption, but it does not “cancel” alcohol. Certain medications and health conditions may increase impairment risk.
How to use the calculator correctly
- Enter your body weight in kilograms.
- Select the biological profile that best matches you.
- Enter total drinks and grams of alcohol per drink.
- Enter hours since your first drink.
- Select your legal comparison limit and click calculate.
Interpreting the result
You will see your estimated BAC, selected legal limit, and whether your estimate is above or below that limit. If above, the calculator also provides an estimated additional wait time to go below the selected threshold.
Even if below the selected legal value, do not drive if you feel sleepy, dizzy, unfocused, or impaired in any way.
Safer alternatives to driving after drinking
- Use a rideshare or taxi.
- Use public transit if available.
- Designate a sober driver before drinking starts.
- Stay overnight and drive the next day.
Frequently asked questions
Can coffee lower BAC faster?
No. Coffee may make you feel more awake but does not meaningfully speed up alcohol metabolism.
Does drinking water reduce BAC quickly?
Water supports hydration but does not rapidly reduce BAC. Only time reduces BAC in a substantial way.
Is this calculator valid for legal defense?
No. This is not a forensic tool. Legal BAC is determined by approved testing methods in your jurisdiction.
