How this apprenticeship wage calculator works
Apprentice pay is often tied to a percentage of the fully qualified hourly rate. This tool takes that base wage and applies a year-based percentage to estimate apprentice hourly pay and gross earnings over a week, month, and year.
It also checks your estimate against a minimum hourly wage that you provide. If the percentage-based rate falls below your minimum, the calculator automatically uses the higher value.
Inputs explained
1) Full-rate hourly wage
Enter the normal hourly wage paid to a fully qualified worker in your trade or role. This is the anchor number used to calculate apprentice percentages.
2) Apprenticeship year
Many programs increase wages each year. This calculator uses a common stepped structure:
- Year 1: 50% of full rate
- Year 2: 60% of full rate
- Year 3: 70% of full rate
- Year 4: 80% of full rate
If your union agreement, employer policy, or country rules use different percentages, treat this as a planning estimate.
3) Hours per week and weeks per year
These two values drive annual earnings. Use realistic numbers that account for vacation, holidays, training blocks, or seasonal slowdowns.
4) Minimum allowed hourly wage
Wage laws vary by location and age. Enter the relevant minimum wage for your situation. The tool compares it with your calculated apprentice percentage and uses whichever is higher.
What the results mean
After you calculate, you’ll see:
- Calculated apprentice rate: percentage-based rate from your selected year.
- Applied hourly rate: final hourly rate after checking your minimum wage floor.
- Weekly, monthly, and annual gross pay: pre-tax estimates based on your hours and weeks.

Example scenario
Suppose a fully qualified wage is $30/hour, you’re in Year 2 (60%), and you work 40 hours per week for 50 weeks:
- Estimated apprentice rate = $30 × 0.60 = $18.00/hour
- If minimum wage entered is $7.50, applied rate remains $18.00/hour
- Weekly gross pay = $18.00 × 40 = $720
- Annual gross pay = $720 × 50 = $36,000
