How this ARMS Malta bill calculator works

Utility bills can feel complicated when they combine electricity, water, sewerage, fixed service charges, and VAT. This calculator breaks the bill into simple parts so you can see exactly where your money is going.

Instead of guessing why your total changed from one cycle to the next, you can model each variable directly. Increase or decrease consumption, update tariff values from your latest statement, and instantly preview the expected bill.

What to copy from your latest statement

For the best estimate, keep your latest bill open while entering values. The inputs above are pre-filled with sample values only.

  • Electricity day and night usage in kWh.
  • Electricity rates that apply to your tariff band.
  • Water usage in cubic meters (m³).
  • Water rate and sewerage percentage.
  • Fixed meter or service charges.
  • VAT rate shown on your invoice.

Bill formula used in the calculator

1) Electricity cost

Electricity cost is calculated from day and night consumption separately:

  • Day cost = Day kWh × Day tariff
  • Night cost = Night kWh × Night tariff
  • Total electricity = Day cost + Night cost

2) Water and sewerage cost

Water cost is calculated from water volume and tariff, then sewerage is applied as a percentage of the water cost.

  • Water cost = Water m³ × Water tariff
  • Sewerage = Water cost × (Sewerage % / 100)

3) Subtotal, VAT, and final total

  • Subtotal = Electricity + Water + Sewerage + Fixed charges
  • VAT amount = Subtotal × (VAT % / 100)
  • Estimated total = Subtotal + VAT amount

Example scenario

With the default values loaded in this page (60 days, 250 day kWh, 60 night kWh, 18 m³ water), the calculator produces an estimated total around the mid €100 range. That gives a practical benchmark for planning cash flow during the billing cycle.

If your actual bill is significantly different, it usually means one of the following:

  • Your tariff band or unit rate changed.
  • Your fixed charges are higher or lower than the sample value.
  • Usage for one utility is much different from last cycle.
  • A special adjustment, credit, or prior balance was applied.

How to reduce your utility bill over time

Electricity habits

  • Shift flexible consumption to lower-rate periods where available.
  • Replace high-use bulbs and appliances with efficient alternatives.
  • Track high-load devices (water heaters, dryers, AC units) weekly.

Water efficiency

  • Repair small leaks quickly; even slow drips add up across weeks.
  • Use low-flow fixtures where practical.
  • Compare seasonal patterns to identify unusual usage spikes.

This page is designed for planning and education. It is not an official ARMS Malta billing tool. Always treat your official invoice as the final amount due.
