Calculate Your Rising Sign (Ascendant)

Enter your birth details as accurately as possible. The ascendant changes quickly, so even a 10-15 minute time difference can matter.

This tool uses tropical zodiac math with astronomical sidereal time formulas.

What Is an Astrological Ascendant?

Your ascendant, also called your rising sign, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your exact birth moment and location. In natal astrology, this point is one of the three most discussed chart anchors: Sun sign, Moon sign, and Ascendant.

If your Sun sign is your core identity and your Moon sign is your emotional world, your ascendant is often described as your social interface: first impressions, style, and how you instinctively approach new environments.

Why Birth Time and Place Matter So Much

The ascendant changes approximately every two hours, and in some regions even faster. That means accurate input is crucial:

  • Date: Sets planetary and Earth orientation context.
  • Time: Determines what section of the zodiac is at the eastern horizon.
  • Timezone: Converts local clock time to UTC for astronomy calculations.
  • Latitude and Longitude: Horizon geometry depends on where on Earth you were born.

How This Ascendant Calculator Works

1) Convert Local Birth Time to UTC

The calculator starts by converting your local birth time using your UTC offset. This avoids device timezone issues and keeps the computation consistent worldwide.

2) Compute Julian Day and Sidereal Time

Astronomical formulas use Julian Day as a continuous time scale. From that value, the calculator derives Greenwich Mean Sidereal Time, then adjusts by longitude to get Local Sidereal Time.

3) Solve the Eastern Horizon Intersection

Using local sidereal time, Earth latitude, and the obliquity of the ecliptic, the script computes the ecliptic longitude crossing the eastern horizon. That longitude is your ascendant point.

4) Convert Longitude into Sign + Degree

The 360-degree zodiac is divided into 12 signs of 30 degrees each. The result is shown as: sign name, degree, and arc-minute position (for example, Leo 14°23').

Tips for Better Accuracy

  • Use your birth certificate if available.
  • Double-check daylight saving handling via correct UTC offset at birth date.
  • Use decimal coordinates from a trusted map source.
  • If birth time is uncertain, test a 30-minute range and compare results.
