How this AU GPA calculator works
This calculator uses a weighted GPA method, which means each subject contributes according to its credit points. A 12-credit subject has twice the impact of a 6-credit subject. That gives you a more accurate result than simply averaging grade points across all units.
By default, many Australian universities use a 7-point GPA framework: High Distinction (7), Distinction (6), Credit (5), Pass (4), and Fail (0). If your institution uses a 4.0 scale, switch the dropdown and calculate in that system instead.
AU grading scale reference (common)
7-point scale
- HD (High Distinction): 7.0
- D (Distinction): 6.0
- CR (Credit): 5.0
- P (Pass): 4.0
- F (Fail): 0.0
Some institutions may include additional grades like supplementary pass, conceded pass, withdrawal, or non-graded pass. Always check your university handbook for official GPA rules.
Step-by-step: calculate your semester GPA

Projecting your cumulative GPA
If you provide your current GPA and completed credits, this tool also estimates your new cumulative GPA after the current term. This is useful for scholarship planning, postgraduate entry targets, honors cutoffs, and progress checks.
Tips to improve your GPA strategically
- Prioritize high-credit units because they affect GPA more strongly.
- Track results early in the semester so there are no end-of-term surprises.
- Use assessment weighting calculators for each course before final exams.
- Meet tutors during office hours to improve assignment quality and exam technique.
- Build a weekly revision schedule and protect focused study blocks.
