What score do you need for skilled migration?
For many General Skilled Migration streams, 65 points is the baseline threshold to be considered. However, practical invitation scores are often higher depending on your occupation, state criteria, and annual quotas.
- Below 65: You likely need improvements before lodging or before being competitive.
- 65–74: You may be eligible, but invitation timing can be uncertain in competitive occupations.
- 75–84: Often a stronger range for many skilled applicants.
- 85+: Usually highly competitive, especially when paired with a high-demand occupation.
Points categories explained
1) Age
Age can be one of the largest contributors to your score. Applicants aged 25–32 generally receive the maximum points in this category. If you are close to an age band change, timing your application can matter significantly.
2) English language score
Moving from competent to proficient or superior English can add a meaningful number of points. Many candidates improve their profile substantially by retaking IELTS, PTE Academic, or other accepted tests to reach a higher band.
3) Skilled employment (inside and outside Australia)
Work experience must usually align with your nominated occupation and skills assessment requirements. Australian work experience and overseas experience are counted in separate bands and can stack together.
4) Education qualifications
Higher qualifications can increase points, especially recognised degrees and doctorates. Ensure your qualification is assessed appropriately by the relevant authority for your occupation.
5) Additional factors
