average nhs pension per month calculator

NHS Pension Monthly Estimate Tool

Use this calculator to estimate your average NHS pension per month in gross terms. It is a planning tool only and not official financial advice.

Used only for the 2015 CARE estimate.
Use a negative value for early retirement reduction, positive for late retirement uplift.

How to use this average NHS pension per month calculator

This page gives you a quick estimate of what your NHS pension could look like each month. Enter your scheme, pensionable pay, and years of service. The calculator then estimates your annual pension and divides it into a monthly figure.

  • Step 1: Select the correct scheme section (1995, 2008, or 2015).
  • Step 2: Add your pensionable salary or earnings.
  • Step 3: Enter total pensionable service in years.
  • Step 4: Add any retirement adjustment (early or late retirement).
  • Step 5: Optionally include state pension for a combined monthly figure.

How the estimate is calculated

1995 Section (Final Salary)

Estimated annual pension = salary × years ÷ 80. This section also includes an automatic tax-free lump sum in many cases, generally around 3× annual pension.

2008 Section (Final Salary)

Estimated annual pension = salary × years ÷ 60. There is no automatic lump sum in the same way as the 1995 section, though members may usually exchange pension for lump sum options at retirement.

2015 Scheme (CARE)

The 2015 scheme is Career Average Revalued Earnings (CARE). A simplified estimate is used here based on 1/54 accrual and an annual revaluation assumption. Real outcomes vary by actual yearly earnings and official revaluation applied each year.

What your monthly pension figure means

The result shown is a gross monthly estimate before tax. Your net amount received can be lower depending on income tax and any other deductions. Pension income can affect your total tax position if you have additional earnings, private pensions, or part-time work.

  • It does not include personal tax calculations.
  • It does not model Annual Allowance or Lifetime Allowance history.
  • It does not replace your official NHS pension statement.

Example (quick scenario)

If someone in the 2008 section has pensionable pay of £45,000 and 28 years of service, a simple estimate gives:

  • Annual pension: £45,000 × 28 ÷ 60 = £21,000
  • Monthly pension: £21,000 ÷ 12 = £1,750

If they retire early and expect a 15% reduction, the adjusted annual amount would be £17,850, or about £1,487.50 per month.

Important limitations

This calculator is intentionally simple so it is easy to use. NHS pensions are detailed and can involve protections, transitions, part-time service treatment, pension sharing, and inflation-linked adjustments. Use this for planning only, then verify with official documents.

Ways to improve retirement readiness

  • Check your official NHS pension record regularly.
  • Keep service records accurate, including part-time periods.
  • Review retirement timing and reduction/uplift effects.
  • Consider AVCs or personal pension top-ups where suitable.
  • Speak to a regulated financial adviser for retirement decisions.

FAQ

Is this an official NHS calculator?

No. It is an educational estimate tool and not an official NHS Business Services Authority calculator.

Can this predict my exact monthly pension?

No. It provides a planning estimate only. Exact benefits depend on your full pension record and scheme rules at retirement.

Should I include state pension?

Include it if you want a rough combined retirement income figure. Keep in mind state pension starts at state pension age and may differ from your NHS retirement date.
