How due date calculation works
1) Last Menstrual Period (LMP)
This is the standard clinical method. Pregnancy is counted as 40 weeks (280 days) from the first day of your last menstrual period. This method is widely used because it provides a consistent way to track gestational age, even when ovulation day is unknown.
2) Conception date
If you know conception timing, due date is usually estimated as conception date plus 266 days (38 weeks). This can be helpful when ovulation and conception are tracked closely.
3) IVF transfer date
For IVF pregnancies, providers often use embryo transfer timing. The embryo age at transfer (for example day 3 or day 5) is used to calculate expected delivery timing more precisely.
Understanding gestational age
Gestational age is counted from LMP, not from conception. That means at the moment of conception, pregnancy is already considered about 2 weeks along in most clinical systems.
- First trimester: 0 weeks to 13 weeks, 6 days
- Second trimester: 14 weeks to 27 weeks, 6 days
- Third trimester: 28 weeks to birth
Why your due date may change
Even with a good calculator, your provider may adjust your due date. This happens because of:
