Blackjack EV Calculator
Estimate your expected value (EV) per hand and per session based on your own probabilities and table conditions.
What this blackjack EV calculator does
This tool calculates the mathematical expectation of your blackjack play. Expected value (EV) is your average profit or loss over the long run. It does not predict what happens in your next hour, but it does tell you whether your current game setup is profitable over many hands.
You provide your estimated probabilities for four outcomes: regular wins, losses, pushes, and natural blackjacks. The calculator then computes:
- EV per hand
- EV per hour and per session
- Equivalent player edge or house edge
- Estimated volatility (standard deviation)
Formula behind the calculator
Per-hand EV in bet units
Let the outcome value be +1 for a normal win, -1 for a loss, 0 for a push, and +blackjack payout for a natural blackjack. Then:
EV (units) = P(win) × 1 + P(blackjack) × payout + P(push) × 0 + P(loss) × (-1)
Multiply by your average bet size to convert units into dollars.
Session EV
Session EV is simply:
EV/session = EV/hand × total hands played
Where total hands played = hands per hour × number of hours.
How to interpret the output
- Positive EV: You have a long-term edge under these assumptions.
- Negative EV: The game favors the house in the long run.
- Standard deviation: A rough measure of swing size; bigger values mean rougher short-term results.
Even with positive EV, short sessions can still lose due to variance. That is normal in blackjack.
Getting better EV in blackjack
1) Improve decision quality
Basic strategy is the foundation. Strategy mistakes increase your loss probability and reduce EV immediately.
2) Choose stronger table rules
- Prefer 3:2 blackjack payout over 6:5.
- Look for fewer decks where practical.
- Prefer rules that allow doubling after split and late surrender.
3) Manage pace and bet size
Hands per hour affects total EV and total variance. More hands means faster realization of your edge (or disadvantage). Bet size scales both your upside and your risk.
Important limitations
This calculator is only as accurate as your probability inputs. Real casino outcomes vary by rules, number of decks, penetration, playing style, and whether card counting or deviations are used. It also assumes a consistent average bet and does not model splits, doubles, or surrender as separate line items.
Use it as a planning and comparison tool, not as a guarantee of short-term profit.
