Borderlands 2 Skill Point Planner
Use this quick calculator to estimate available skill points based on level, then test your point split across all three trees.
Tree Allocation
How this Borderlands 2 skill calculator works
Planning a build in Borderlands 2 is all about one thing: spending limited points in the right places at the right time. This calculator helps you do that quickly by tracking your available points and comparing them to what you have allocated across your three skill trees.
Unlike full game-accurate planners with every individual skill node and prerequisite, this version is a clean point-budget calculator. It is ideal when you want to answer practical questions like: “Can I reach two capstones at this level?” or “How many points do I have left if I push one tree deep first?”
Point formula used
In Borderlands 2, skill points start at level 5. So this page uses:
- Base skill points from level = level - 4 (minimum 0)
- Total available points = base points + bonus points
If you set level to 80, you get 76 base points before any bonus adjustments.
Class skill trees included
When you choose a class, the tree names in the calculator automatically update:
- Axton: Guerrilla, Gunpowder, Survival
- Maya: Motion, Harmony, Cataclysm
- Salvador: Gun Lust, Rampage, Brawn
- Zer0: Sniping, Cunning, Bloodshed
- Gaige: Best Friends Forever, Little Big Trouble, Ordered Chaos
- Krieg: Bloodlust, Mania, Hellborn
Build planning tips for stronger characters
1) Decide your capstone goal early
Most builds revolve around one capstone first, then branch out. A common benchmark is hitting 26 points in a tree to unlock that capstone. This calculator highlights capstone-ready trees for you.
2) Don’t split too early while leveling
During campaign progression, spreading points too thin can feel weak. Focus points into one primary tree, then diversify after your core damage/survivability engine is online.
3) Balance offense, sustain, and utility
High DPS is great, but many endgame encounters reward consistency. Consider a point split that includes:
- A reliable damage core
- A defensive or healing layer
- A utility package (cooldown, reload, movement, crowd control)
Example planning milestones
Level 31 milestone
At level 31, you have 27 base points. That usually means one capstone is possible with minimal flexibility. This is a classic “single-tree power spike” point in progression.
Level 50 milestone
At level 50, you have 46 base points. This is where hybrid builds become more realistic: one full capstone tree and meaningful investment in a second tree.
Level 80 milestone
At level 80, you have 76 base points. Now you can usually support deep synergies across multiple trees, and your gearing strategy becomes just as important as your point layout.
Why a simple calculator is still useful
Full node-by-node planners are excellent, but sometimes you only need fast math and structure. A point-budget calculator is perfect for discussing builds with friends, checking if a respec idea works, or comparing two distribution strategies before you spend in-game cash at the Quick Change station.
Final notes
Use this as your planning baseline, then tune in-game based on your weapons, shields, class mods, and playstyle. Borderlands 2 rewards experimentation, and even small point changes can dramatically alter performance.
