Bosch Range & Vent Planning Calculator

Use this calculator to estimate recommended vent hood airflow (CFM), hood width, and electrical circuit guidance for a Bosch range setup.

For gas ranges, enter total burner BTU output (e.g., 45,000 to 65,000).

Note: This is an independent planning estimate and not an official Bosch sizing tool.

Why use a Bosch range calculator?

If you are planning a kitchen around a Bosch range, the appliance itself is only part of the decision. Ventilation, hood size, duct design, and electrical supply all need to match your cooking style. A good range calculator helps you avoid common mistakes, such as choosing a hood that is too weak, installing an undersized duct, or underestimating electrical requirements.

This page gives you a practical “first-pass” estimate so you can compare options before speaking with an installer, HVAC pro, or electrician.

What this calculator estimates

  • Recommended hood CFM range based on cooking power, room size, and duct friction.
  • Suggested hood width so smoke and grease capture is more effective.
  • Minimum duct diameter guidance tied to airflow targets.
  • Electrical circuit estimate for gas, electric, induction, and dual-fuel configurations.

How the calculation works

1) Power-based airflow

For gas ranges, a common rule of thumb is about 1 CFM per 100 BTU/hr. For electric and induction, watts are converted to BTU/hr (1 watt ≈ 3.412 BTU/hr), then translated to CFM similarly. This gives a base airflow requirement tied directly to heat output.

2) Room-volume airflow

The kitchen volume method estimates airflow needed to refresh air at an effective cooking rate. Larger kitchens can require more airflow even with moderate burner power.

3) Installation and duct penalties

Island hoods generally require more airflow than wall-mounted setups because they lack back-wall capture support. Long ducts and extra elbows also increase static pressure, so airflow needs rise to maintain actual capture performance at the hood.

4) Cooking intensity

Frequent wok cooking, searing, blackening, and high-heat frying need more aggressive ventilation than low-heat simmering. The calculator adjusts for this with a cooking-style multiplier.

Bosch range planning tips

Match hood width to cooking surface

At minimum, your hood should match the range width. For better performance, choose a hood that is wider than the cooktop—especially for island installs.

Don’t ignore duct design

Two homes can have the same range and hood model but very different real-world performance if one has long duct runs with several elbows. Keep ducts short, straight, and smooth whenever possible.

Account for make-up air requirements

Many regions require make-up air systems above certain CFM thresholds. If your target CFM is high, confirm local code requirements early in the project to avoid costly rework.

Verify model-specific specifications

Always cross-check your final plan with the exact Bosch model installation manual. Product manuals define clearances, electrical specs, and venting requirements that override generic rules of thumb.

Example use case

Imagine a 30-inch Bosch gas range with 56,000 BTU in a 14×12 kitchen with 9-foot ceilings, an island hood, a 12-foot duct run, and two elbows. The calculator will typically suggest a higher CFM target than a short wall-mounted setup in the same room. This is exactly why planning tools are useful: installation details matter as much as the appliance rating.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an official Bosch calculator?

No. This is an independent planning calculator to help with early decision-making.

Can I use this for 36-inch or 48-inch professional-style ranges?

Yes. Enter the real width and burner output for your model. Higher-output ranges usually push the recommendation toward larger CFM and duct size.

Does higher CFM always mean better?

Not always. Very high airflow can increase noise and conditioned-air loss. Balanced design—good capture area, practical ducting, and right-sized blower—usually performs best.

Should I hire a professional?

Absolutely. Use this tool for planning, then validate with a licensed installer and electrician before purchase and installation.
