Golf Handicap Calculator (WHS-style)
Enter each round's Adjusted Gross Score, Course Rating, and Slope Rating. PCC is optional and defaults to 0.

Need at least 3 complete rounds. For 20 rounds, the index uses the lowest 8 differentials (WHS method).

What does it mean to calculate a handicap?
A golf handicap is a number that represents your potential scoring ability, not your average score. It helps golfers of different skill levels compete fairly. If you are learning how to calculate a handicap, the key idea is simple: your index is based on your best recent rounds after adjusting for course difficulty.
Modern handicaps follow the World Handicap System (WHS). That system uses score differentials, then averages a specific number of your lowest differentials based on how many rounds you have posted.
The core formula
For each round, calculate a Score Differential:
Score Differential = ((Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating − PCC) × 113) ÷ Slope Rating
- Adjusted Gross Score: your score after any maximum hole-score adjustments.
- Course Rating: expected score for a scratch golfer from that set of tees.
- Slope Rating: how much harder the course plays for a bogey golfer versus a scratch golfer.
- PCC: Playing Conditions Calculation (often 0 on most casual scorecards).
After you have your differentials, use the WHS table to decide how many of the lowest differentials to average.
How many differentials are used?
- 3 rounds: lowest 1, minus 2.0 adjustment
- 4 rounds: lowest 1, minus 1.0 adjustment
- 5 rounds: lowest 1
- 6 rounds: lowest 2, minus 1.0 adjustment
- 7-8 rounds: lowest 2
- 9-11 rounds: lowest 3
- 12-14 rounds: lowest 4
- 15-16 rounds: lowest 5
- 17-18 rounds: lowest 6
- 19 rounds: lowest 7
- 20 rounds: lowest 8
Step-by-step example
Suppose you have 20 rounds posted. You compute 20 score differentials, sort from lowest to highest, and take the best 8. If those best 8 average to 12.6, your estimated Handicap Index is 12.6 (rounded to the nearest tenth).
To convert your Handicap Index into a Course Handicap for a particular tee box, use:
Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par)
This is why your strokes can change between courses and even between tee sets at the same course.
Common mistakes when calculating a handicap
- Using raw score instead of adjusted gross score.
- Mixing up Course Rating and Slope Rating.
- Averaging all rounds instead of only the required low differentials.
- Ignoring tee-specific values; ratings can differ by tee box.
- Expecting handicap to match your scoring average exactly.
Tips to improve your handicap over time
1) Keep posting accurate scores
Consistency matters. A complete scoring history makes your index more stable and useful.
2) Track where strokes are lost
Many players lose more shots around the green than with full swings. Basic short-game practice can lower your differentials quickly.
3) Play different courses
Exposure to varied layouts improves decision-making and helps your index better reflect real playing ability.
Final note
This calculator gives a practical WHS-style estimate. For official posting, always use your local golf association or club handicap service. Still, if your goal is to understand how to calculate a handicap and monitor progress, this tool is a solid place to start.
