Erasmus Distance & Travel Support Calculator

Enter two places to estimate the one-way Erasmus distance and an indicative travel grant band. If geocoding fails, you can enter distance manually.

What is the Erasmus distance calculator?

The Erasmus distance calculator is used to estimate the travel distance between your sending and receiving locations for mobility programs. That distance determines which funding band applies to your mobility. In many Erasmus actions, the band (not exact kilometer-by-kilometer cost) is what matters for travel support.

In plain terms: your route is measured once, matched to a distance bracket, and then assigned a fixed grant amount for travel. This page gives you a practical, quick estimate before you submit paperwork.

How distance is usually interpreted in Erasmus+

1) One-way distance is used for the band

Most Erasmus calculations use one-way distance between origin and destination to identify the bracket. The awarded amount typically supports your round trip through a fixed band value.

2) Straight-line method, not ticket mileage

The official method often relies on geodesic (great-circle) distance, not the exact train, car, or flight path you booked. That is why your ticket invoice distance can differ from the Erasmus result.

3) Green travel can change the amount

Some mobility lines provide higher support for low-emission travel modes. Eligibility and documentation can vary, so check your institution’s guidance before selecting this option.

How to use this calculator distance erasmus tool

  • Type your origin and destination (city + country gives best results).
  • Optionally enter manual distance in kilometers if you already know the official value.
  • Set the number of participants for a quick total estimate.
  • Tick green travel if your project allows it.
  • Click Calculate Erasmus Distance.

The output includes your estimated one-way distance, estimated round-trip planning distance, band, per-participant grant, and total grant for the participant count entered.

Example scenarios

Short mobility in Europe

If your one-way distance is 420 km, you fall in the 100–499 km band. Under the reference values shown above, that corresponds to the related standard or green amount for that bracket.

Medium distance exchange

If the measured one-way distance is 1,750 km, the correct band is 500–1,999 km. You should not claim the 2,000+ bracket unless the official calculator result is in that range.

Long-haul destination

For intercontinental mobility, once distance passes 8,000 km, the highest listed bracket applies. In these cases, always validate with your coordinator because project rules may include additional conditions.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using driving distance from map apps instead of straight-line distance.
  • Choosing airports rather than institutional cities without coordinator approval.
  • Assuming all Erasmus actions use the same grant table every year.
  • Forgetting that documentation requirements may differ for green travel.
  • Treating this estimate as a final award letter.

Final tip before submitting your mobility budget

Use this calculator for fast planning, then confirm with your university’s international office or project coordinator. Official approval always comes from your program documents and National Agency guidance. If you keep that final verification step, your Erasmus budget forecast will be much more reliable.
