calculator for body shape

Body Shape Calculator

Enter your measurements to estimate your likely body shape category (hourglass, pear, apple, rectangle, or inverted triangle).

Tip: Use a soft measuring tape and keep it level, snug, and not tight.

What this body shape calculator does

This tool compares your shoulder, bust/chest, waist, and hip measurements to estimate your body shape. It uses proportional relationships rather than body weight, so the result focuses on your frame and distribution. It can be useful for clothing fit, personal styling, and understanding how garments may drape on your body.

Your output is an estimate, not a medical diagnosis and not a judgment. Human bodies are diverse, and many people sit between categories. If your result is “mixed,” that is completely normal.

How to measure correctly

1) Shoulders

Wrap the tape around the broadest part of your upper shoulders, keeping it parallel to the floor.

2) Bust/Chest

Measure around the fullest part of your bust/chest. Stand upright and breathe normally.

3) Waist

Find your natural waist (usually just above the navel and below the ribcage) and measure at the narrowest point.

4) Hips

Measure around the fullest part of your hips and glutes, with your feet together.

  • Use the same tape measure for all values.
  • Take each measurement twice and use the average if needed.
  • Wear light clothing or measure over fitted undergarments.

Body shape categories explained

Hourglass

Bust/chest and hips are similar in size, with a distinctly smaller waist. Clothing that follows your natural waistline often fits best.

Pear (Triangle)

Hips are proportionally larger than bust/chest and shoulders. Many people with this shape prefer balancing volume on top with structure, texture, or layering.

Inverted Triangle

Shoulders or bust/chest are proportionally broader than hips. Styling often focuses on adding visual balance to the lower body.

Apple (Round)

Waist is less defined relative to bust/chest and hips. Comfortable structure and strategic tailoring can improve fit and silhouette.

Rectangle

Shoulders, bust/chest, waist, and hips are relatively balanced with less waist contrast. Shape can be enhanced through contour and layering choices.

How to use your result

A body shape estimate helps with practical choices, not rigid labels. You can use it to:

  • Choose cuts that align with your proportions.
  • Reduce online shopping returns by using shape-aware sizing decisions.
  • Build capsule wardrobes with better consistency in fit.
  • Track proportion changes over time during fitness or recomposition.

Important limitations

No calculator is perfect. Posture, muscle mass, bloating, hydration, and tape placement can all affect measurements. Also, most people do not fit one category 100% of the time. Treat the output as a starting point, then adjust based on what feels and fits best in real life.

Frequently asked questions

Does body shape equal body fat percentage?

No. Body shape is about proportion. Body fat percentage is a separate metric.

Can my body shape change over time?

Yes. Training style, aging, hormones, and lifestyle changes can shift your measurements and proportions.

Should I use inches or centimeters?

Either works. The calculator uses ratios, so shape classification stays the same as long as all inputs use the same unit.
