IELTS Overall Band Score Calculator

Enter your four module band scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking). This tool calculates your average and applies official IELTS half-band rounding rules.

How this IELTS band calculator works

The IELTS overall band score is based on the average of your four test components: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each component is scored from band 0 to band 9. Once the average is calculated, IELTS rounds the result to the nearest half band or whole band.

This calculator gives you two values:

  • Raw average: the exact mathematical mean of your four module scores.
  • Official overall band: the rounded score used by institutions and immigration systems.

IELTS rounding rules (official style)

After averaging your four section scores, IELTS rounds as follows:

  • If decimal part is below .25 → round down to the nearest whole band.
  • If decimal part is from .25 to .74 → round to the nearest .5 band.
  • If decimal part is .75 or above → round up to the next whole band.
Example: If your average is 6.625, your overall band becomes 6.5. If your average is 6.75, your overall band becomes 7.0.

Examples of IELTS overall band calculation

Example 1

Listening 7.5, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.5, Speaking 7.0

Average = (7.5 + 7.0 + 6.5 + 7.0) / 4 = 7.0 → Overall band: 7.0

Example 2

Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.5, Speaking 6.5

Average = 7.0 exactly → Overall band: 7.0

Example 3

Listening 7.0, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.0, Speaking 6.5

Average = 6.5 → Overall band: 6.5

Tips to improve your overall IELTS score faster

If your target score is close, strategic preparation can move you up by 0.5 band quickly.

  • Focus on your weakest module first; it drags down the average most.
  • Use timed practice tests to build test-day speed and stamina.
  • For Writing and Speaking, get expert feedback instead of self-scoring only.
  • Track your weekly module bands and recalculate your projected overall score.
  • Learn high-frequency vocabulary and collocations for your target topics.

Frequently asked questions

Is this calculator valid for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training?

Yes. The overall band calculation method is the same. Only the Reading and Writing tasks differ between Academic and General Training, not the final averaging and rounding process.

Can I enter decimal bands like 6.25 or 6.75?

You can enter any value between 0 and 9 in this tool. In real score reports, module scores are typically shown in 0.5 steps, but this calculator still handles decimal values correctly and rounds the final overall band using IELTS-style logic.

What overall IELTS band do most universities require?

Many universities ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall, with minimum module requirements (for example, no section below 6.0). Always check exact requirements for your chosen program, country, and visa pathway.
