Estimate Your Canada Import Charges
Enter your shipment details to estimate customs duty, GST/HST/PST, and total amount due at delivery.
Buying from international stores can save money, but border charges can quickly change the final cost. This Canada customs duty calculator gives you a practical estimate before checkout, so you can decide whether a purchase is truly worth it.
What this calculator includes
- Estimated customs duty based on product category and origin.
- Estimated GST/HST/PST using your delivery province or territory.
- Low-value thresholds for common courier and postal scenarios.
- Brokerage/handling fees to reflect real-world landed cost.
- Total amount due at the border and approximate landed total.
How Canada import charges are usually calculated
1) Convert your price to CAD
CBSA charges are assessed in Canadian dollars. If you paid in USD, EUR, GBP, or another currency, use an exchange rate to convert the item and shipping values.
2) Determine customs value
The customs value often starts with item value plus shipping/insurance (simplified for this calculator). This becomes the base for duty and taxes.
3) Apply duty rate
Duty depends on tariff classification and origin. Some products have 0% duty, while apparel and footwear can be significantly higher. If your goods qualify under CUSMA with valid documentation, duty may be reduced to 0%.
4) Apply GST/HST/PST
Taxes are generally calculated on the customs value plus duty (and any excise tax). The total tax rate depends on where the package is delivered in Canada.
5) Add brokerage or handling fees
Carriers may charge service fees for customs processing. These fees are separate from taxes and duty and can materially affect small orders.
Why your final charge may differ from this estimate
- Tariff classification may differ from category-level estimates.
- Carrier-specific brokerage methods vary widely.
- Exemptions depend on documentation and shipment details.
- Actual exchange rates used by customs can differ from your entered rate.
- Restricted goods (alcohol, tobacco, special products) may trigger additional rules.
Quick examples
Example A: US courier shipment under C$40
If the converted customs value is C$35 and the shipment is by courier from the US or Mexico, the simplified low-value rule can remove both duty and tax. You may still see handling fees depending on the carrier.
Example B: Clothing from overseas
A clothing order often has a higher duty rate. If your item and shipping convert to C$300, duty can be substantial before tax is even added. This is exactly where using a calculator before purchase prevents surprises.
Example C: CUSMA-eligible US goods
If an item qualifies under CUSMA and proper proof is provided, duty may be 0%. You may still owe GST/HST/PST and brokerage.
Tips to lower import costs
- Prefer sellers with transparent “duties and taxes included” checkout.
- Ask for clear product origin and trade agreement eligibility details.
- Compare carriers: shipping speed is not the only cost driver.
- Bundle orders strategically to avoid repeated brokerage fees.
- Keep invoices and origin documents for possible reassessment support.
