How this Canada GST calculator works

This Canada GST calculator is designed to be practical for everyday use. It handles federal GST, harmonized sales tax (HST), and combined GST + provincial sales taxes (PST, RST, or QST) depending on the province or territory you select.

You can use it in two ways:

  • Add tax: Start with a pre-tax price and compute the total including tax.
  • Remove tax: Start with a tax-included amount and extract the pre-tax subtotal and tax amount.

This is useful for invoices, receipts, budgeting, e-commerce pricing, freelance work, and small business bookkeeping.

Canada sales tax rates by province and territory

Canadian sales tax varies by location. Some provinces use GST only, some use HST, and others use a GST + provincial tax model.

  • Alberta: 5% GST
  • British Columbia: 12% total (5% GST + 7% PST)
  • Manitoba: 12% total (5% GST + 7% RST)
  • New Brunswick: 15% HST
  • Newfoundland and Labrador: 15% HST
  • Northwest Territories: 5% GST
  • Nova Scotia: 14% HST
  • Nunavut: 5% GST
  • Ontario: 13% HST
  • Prince Edward Island: 15% HST
  • Quebec: 14.975% total (5% GST + 9.975% QST)
  • Saskatchewan: 11% total (5% GST + 6% PST)
  • Yukon: 5% GST

Because rates can be updated by tax authorities, use this calculator as a fast estimate and confirm official rates when accuracy is mission-critical.

Add tax vs remove tax

1) Adding GST/HST/PST to a pre-tax amount

If your listed price is before tax, calculate:

Tax amount = Pre-tax amount × (Rate ÷ 100)
Total = Pre-tax amount + Tax amount

2) Removing GST/HST/PST from a tax-included amount

If your listed amount already includes tax, calculate:

Pre-tax amount = Tax-included total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
Tax amount = Tax-included total - Pre-tax amount

This “remove tax” function is especially useful when reconciling receipts or calculating the net sale amount for accounting entries.

Practical examples

Example A: Ontario invoice (add tax)

If your pre-tax amount is $250 in Ontario (13% HST):

  • Tax = $250 × 0.13 = $32.50
  • Total = $250 + $32.50 = $282.50

Example B: Alberta receipt (remove tax)

If you paid $105 in Alberta (5% GST included):

  • Pre-tax = $105 ÷ 1.05 = $100.00
  • GST = $5.00

Example C: Quebec sale (add tax)

For a $1,000 pre-tax amount in Quebec (14.975% total):

  • Tax = $149.75
  • Total = $1,149.75

Tips for freelancers and small businesses

  • Separate tax from revenue: Tax collected is generally not your income.
  • Store tax breakdowns: Keep clear records of GST and provincial portions when needed.
  • Use consistent rounding: Most businesses round to two decimals per invoice line or invoice total based on policy.
  • Know exemptions: Not all products and services are taxed the same way.
  • Review province-specific rules: Registration, filing, and remittance obligations can vary.
