What Is a CAO Calculator?

A CAO calculator is a simple tool used by Leaving Certificate students in Ireland to estimate their points total for college applications. The CAO (Central Applications Office) uses points as one of the main ways to decide course offers. Since competition can be tight for popular programs, knowing your points quickly helps you plan course choices with confidence.

Instead of manually checking each subject against the points table, a calculator does the heavy lifting: it converts your grade and level into points, selects your best six subjects, and adds the Higher Level Mathematics bonus where applicable.

How CAO Points Are Calculated

1) Points come from your best 6 subjects

Even if you sit more than six subjects, your total is based on the highest six point-scoring results. That means a lower-performing subject may be excluded automatically.

2) Higher and Ordinary levels have different scales

  • Higher Level (H): H1 = 100 down to H8 = 0.
  • Ordinary Level (O): O1 = 56 down to O8 = 0.

3) Higher Level Maths bonus

If you take Higher Level Mathematics and score between H1 and H6, you receive an extra 25 bonus points. This bonus is added once and can bring the maximum possible total to 625.

Why Students Use a CAO Calculator

  • To estimate likely points before official results day.
  • To compare “best case”, “expected case”, and “backup case” outcomes.
  • To build a realistic CAO preference list (Level 8 and Level 7/6 choices).
  • To spot where small grade improvements could change offer options.

How to Use This Calculator Effectively

  1. Enter each subject name so your result breakdown is easy to read.
  2. Select the correct level for each subject (Higher or Ordinary).
  3. Select your grade (H1–H8 or O1–O8).
  4. Tick HL Maths for the one subject that is Higher Level Mathematics, if relevant.
  5. Click Calculate CAO Points to get your top-6 total and final score.

The result box will show your top six counted subjects, the base total, any bonus points applied, and your final score.

Sample Scenario

Suppose you take 8 subjects and your seventh result is stronger than your fifth. The calculator automatically includes the stronger grade in your best six and drops the weaker one. That prevents common manual errors and gives a more accurate estimate of your likely CAO total.

Important Notes and Limitations

  • This tool is for planning and estimation only.
  • Official offers depend on CAO procedures and course demand in the application year.
  • Some courses may have additional requirements (portfolio, interview, minimum subject criteria).
  • Always verify official points rules with trusted guidance or CAO publications.

Final Thoughts

A good CAO strategy mixes ambition with realism. Use this calculator to understand your numbers, then build a course list that includes dream options, strong fits, and safe alternatives. Better decisions start with clear data—and a CAO calculator is one of the fastest ways to get it.
