Estimate your CAO points from Leaving Certificate grades. Enter up to 8 subjects, then we calculate your best 6 subjects and apply the Higher Level Maths bonus (where eligible).
Note: This is an estimate tool for planning. Always confirm final scoring and course entry rules through official CAO and SEC documentation.
What is a CAO points calculator?
A CAO points calculator helps Leaving Cert students estimate how many points they can bring into the Central Applications Office system. In simple terms, the calculator converts your grades into points, picks your best six subjects, and gives you an overall score to compare against course requirements.
This matters because many undergraduate courses in Ireland fill by points competition. Knowing your likely score helps you build a realistic CAO preference list and reduce last-minute stress.
How CAO points are generally calculated
1) Points by level and grade
Different exam levels award different points for the same performance band. Higher Level usually gives the highest potential points, followed by Ordinary Level. LCVP and Foundation are scored on their own scales.
- Higher Level: H1 (100), H2 (88), H3 (77), H4 (66), H5 (56), H6 (46), H7 (37), H8 (0)
- Ordinary Level: O1 (56), O2 (46), O3 (37), O4 (28), O5 (20), O6 (12), O7 (0), O8 (0)
- Foundation Level: F1 (20), F2 (12)
- LCVP Link Modules: Distinction (66), Merit (46), Pass (28)
2) Best six subjects
For most CAO points calculations, your top six scoring subjects are counted. If you sat more than six, only the best six contribute to your main points total.
3) Higher Level Maths bonus
A 25-point bonus is typically awarded for a qualifying Higher Level Maths grade (H6 or above). The calculator above includes this when you mark the subject as HL Maths and enter an eligible grade.
How to use this calculator correctly
- Enter each subject you sat (up to 8 rows shown).
- Select the exact level for each subject.
- Choose the grade that matches your expected or actual result.
- For Higher Level Maths, tick the HL Maths box on that row.
- Click Calculate CAO Points to view total points and a breakdown of counted subjects.
Example scenario
Imagine a student receives strong results across seven subjects. The calculator may ignore the lowest-scoring subject and keep only the top six. If one of those subjects is Higher Level Maths with H6 or better, the 25 bonus points are added on top.
This gives a clearer picture of competitiveness for high-demand areas such as business, health sciences, engineering, law, and computing.
Common mistakes students make
- Mixing up Higher and Ordinary level while entering results.
- Forgetting to include LCVP where it can improve the top six.
- Assuming all courses accept points only (some also require minimum grades in specific subjects).
- Not checking programme-specific requirements like language or science prerequisites.
Smart CAO strategy beyond points
Build a balanced preference list
Put genuine first-choice courses at the top, then include realistic alternatives and backup options. Rank by true preference, not by guesswork about cut-offs.
Watch minimum entry requirements
Even with high points, you may still need mandatory subject passes or grade thresholds. Always verify course requirements directly with institutions and official handbooks.
Track trend changes
Last yearβs points are useful context, but they can move each cycle depending on demand and available places. Use historical data as a guide, not a guarantee.
Final note
A CAO points calculator is a planning tool, not an official decision engine. Use it early, update it as your mock and final results improve, and combine it with accurate information on course requirements. The goal is confidence: clearer choices, fewer surprises, and better preparation for CAO deadlines.
