How this Chinese zodiac calculator works
The Chinese zodiac is based on the lunar calendar year, not the January 1 Gregorian new year. That detail matters: if you were born in January or early February, your zodiac sign may belong to the previous lunar year.
This calculator determines your lunar zodiac year from your full birth date, then maps it to:
- Your zodiac animal (one of 12 animals)
- Your element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water)
- Your yin/yang polarity
- Your heavenly stem and earthly branch name
The 12 Chinese zodiac animals (in order)
The animal cycle repeats every 12 years in this exact sequence:
- Rat
- Ox
- Tiger
- Rabbit
- Dragon
- Snake
- Horse
- Goat
- Monkey
- Rooster
- Dog
- Pig
The five elements in Chinese astrology
Each zodiac year is also linked to an element. Since each element spans two consecutive years (one yang, one yin), the full pattern runs on a 10-year heavenly stem cycle and combines with the 12-year animal cycle to create a 60-year system.
Element meanings at a glance
- Wood: Growth, flexibility, creativity
- Fire: Passion, action, visibility
- Earth: Stability, responsibility, groundedness
- Metal: Precision, discipline, focus
- Water: Wisdom, adaptability, communication
Why birthdays near Chinese New Year can change your sign
Chinese New Year usually falls between late January and mid-February. So two people born in the same Gregorian year can have different zodiac signs if one was born before the lunar new year and the other after it.
Example: someone born on January 20, 2023 may still belong to the Tiger year, while someone born on February 10, 2023 belongs to the Rabbit year.
Understanding your result
Animal sign
Your animal sign is the most widely known part of Chinese astrology and represents broad personality tendencies.
Element + Yin/Yang
The element and yin/yang polarity add nuance. Two people with the same animal can feel very different if one is, for example, a Yang Fire variant and the other a Yin Water variant.
Stem-branch name
Your heavenly stem and earthly branch pair is the classical naming system used in traditional calendars and metaphysical systems. It is part of a 60-year cycle, meaning your exact combination repeats every 60 years.
FAQ
Is this the same as Western zodiac?
No. Western astrology is based on the sun’s position by date ranges, while Chinese zodiac is based on lunar years and cyclical stem-branch theory.
Can I use only birth year?
You can, but it may be wrong for January and early-February birthdays. Full birth date gives a more reliable result.
Is this a fortune prediction tool?
No. This tool gives traditional classification information (animal, element, polarity, cycle). Interpretation depth depends on broader Chinese metaphysical systems that use additional birth details.
