chinese zodiac and elements calculator

Find Your Chinese Zodiac Animal & Element

Enter your birth year to calculate your Chinese zodiac sign, heavenly stem, yin/yang energy, and five-element association.

Tip: If you are unsure, leave the checkbox unchecked first, then check it and compare both results.

What this Chinese zodiac calculator tells you

The Chinese zodiac follows a repeating 12-animal cycle, while the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) move through a 10-stem cycle. Together they create a 60-year pattern known as the sexagenary cycle. This calculator combines those systems into one easy result.

After calculation, you’ll see your zodiac animal, your element, your yin/yang polarity, and your stem-branch pair (for example, Ren Shen or Gui Hai). This is useful for personal curiosity, cultural learning, or building birth-year based compatibility references.

How the calculation works

1) Zodiac animal (12-year cycle)

The animals repeat every 12 years in this order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.

2) Heavenly stem and element (10-year cycle)

Each year also belongs to one of ten heavenly stems. Every two stems share one element, and each stem has either Yin or Yang energy:

  • Wood: Jia (Yang), Yi (Yin)
  • Fire: Bing (Yang), Ding (Yin)
  • Earth: Wu (Yang), Ji (Yin)
  • Metal: Geng (Yang), Xin (Yin)
  • Water: Ren (Yang), Gui (Yin)

3) Stem + branch = 60-year cycle

A stem combines with an earthly branch (animal) to form a unique year identity. Because 10 and 12 cycles align every 60 years, your exact stem-branch pair repeats every six decades.

Important note for January and February birthdays: Chinese zodiac years start on Chinese New Year, not January 1. If you were born before that date, your zodiac year may be the previous one. Use the checkbox in the calculator to adjust quickly.

  • Ox: steady, reliable, disciplined
  • Tiger: bold, energetic, courageous
  • Rabbit: gentle, diplomatic, artistic
  • Dragon: charismatic, ambitious, visionary
  • Snake: wise, strategic, intuitive

Why element matters as much as animal

Two people can share the same zodiac animal but feel very different because their element and yin/yang polarity are different. For example, a Fire Horse and a Water Horse often express “Horse” traits in distinct ways: one may be more explosive and fast-moving, while the other may be more reflective and emotionally fluid.

That is why this calculator does more than return your animal. It gives a richer profile that reflects the full year pattern.

FAQ

Is this astrology or culture?

Both. Chinese zodiac traditions are cultural and symbolic; many people enjoy them for identity, storytelling, and reflection.

What if I only know my birth year?

You can still use the calculator. If your birthday was in January or early February, try both checkbox states to compare.

Can I use this for compatibility?

Yes, as a starting point. Zodiac compatibility is traditionally interpreted with more details, but year-based matching is a popular first layer.
