Chromatic Orb Probability Calculator (PoE)
Estimate your odds of hitting an exact socket color setup with Chromatic Orbs. Enter an item's attribute requirements, socket count, and desired red/green/blue mix.
What is a Chromatic Calculator in PoE?
A chromatic calculator for Path of Exile helps you estimate how difficult it is to roll a specific socket color combination using Chromatic Orbs. Instead of guessing, you can see your exact single-roll chance, expected orb cost, and success rate for a planned budget.
This is especially useful when trying to force off-colors (for example, several blue sockets on a high-strength armor base), where costs can jump from “cheap” to “very expensive” quickly.
How Socket Colors Are Weighted
Path of Exile ties socket color odds to an item's attribute requirements. A common approximation is:
Green weight = Dexterity Requirement + 10
Blue weight = Intelligence Requirement + 10
Then each socket is rolled from those normalized probabilities. So if an item has high Strength and little Intelligence, red is much more likely than blue.
Exact Combo Probability
To compute the chance of getting exactly R red, G green, and B blue on N sockets, we use the multinomial formula:
Where pR, pG, and pB are per-socket red/green/blue probabilities. This calculator uses that formula directly.
How to Use This Tool
- Enter your item's Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence requirements.
- Set the total socket count (1 to 6).
- Enter the exact number of red, green, and blue sockets you want.
- Optionally add a Chromatic Orb budget to see your “at least once” success chance.
- Click Calculate Odds.
What the Results Mean
- Single-roll chance: odds from one Chromatic Orb.
- Average chromatics needed: long-run expectation (1 / chance).
- 50% and 90% targets: rough planning points for practical crafting sessions.
- Budget success chance: probability of hitting your target at least once within your chosen number of tries.
Practical Coloring Strategy Tips
1) Respect base type bias
If your desired colors fight the item's attribute bias, costs can be brutal. For extreme off-color setups, consider alternative bases if your build allows it.
2) Compare with bench methods
Crafting bench options that guarantee one or more colors can be cheaper than pure rerolling, especially for hard combinations. This calculator is for normal Chromatic Orb rolling and does not price bench recipes automatically.
3) Use budget checkpoints
Set a maximum orb budget before starting. If your projected 90% threshold is far above what you can spend, switch strategy early instead of sinking currency.
FAQ
Is this calculator exact?
It is mathematically exact for independent socket color rolls using the standard requirement-based weighting model shown above.
Does it include Vorici/bench coloring costs?
No. Bench methods use fixed-cost deterministic outcomes and should be evaluated separately.
Can I use this for 1–6 sockets?
Yes. The tool supports any socket count from 1 through 6.
