Course Slope Rating Calculator

Enter a Course Rating and Bogey Rating to estimate a USGA-style slope rating. This helps you compare how difficult a course plays for higher-handicap golfers relative to lower-handicap golfers.

Already know your slope rating? Use this to estimate your Course Handicap under the World Handicap System:
Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par)

What is a course slope rating?

In golf, slope rating measures how much harder a course plays for a bogey golfer compared with a scratch golfer. While course rating estimates the score a scratch golfer is expected to shoot, slope rating focuses on the relative difficulty gap between skill levels.

The standard slope baseline is 113. Ratings above 113 indicate a course that is tougher than average for higher-handicap golfers. Ratings below 113 suggest a course that is comparatively more forgiving.

How slope rating is calculated

A common formula used in official rating systems is:

Slope Rating = (Bogey Rating − Course Rating) × Factor

  • Men's factor: 5.381
  • Women's factor: 4.24
  • Official slope ratings are generally constrained to a range of 55 to 155.

Quick example

If a tee set has a Course Rating of 72.4 and a Bogey Rating of 98.1 using the men's factor:

(98.1 − 72.4) × 5.381 = 138.3, which rounds to a slope rating of 138.

How to use this calculator

  • Enter your Course Rating and Bogey Rating from the scorecard or club rating sheet.
  • Select the proper formula factor (men's or women's rating basis).
  • Click Calculate Slope Rating to see the rounded result.
  • Optionally, use the second calculator to estimate Course Handicap for a specific tee and par.

Slope rating vs. course rating (why both matter)

Course Rating

Tells you what a scratch golfer is expected to score in normal conditions on that tee set.

Slope Rating

Tells you how strongly difficulty increases for non-scratch golfers relative to scratch players.

Together, these values allow the handicap system to produce fairer competition when players of different abilities and different courses are involved.

Using slope rating to estimate Course Handicap

Under WHS principles, your Course Handicap depends on more than slope alone. It also includes the difference between Course Rating and Par.

Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope / 113) + (Course Rating − Par)

This means two courses with the same slope can still give different Course Handicap results if their Course Ratings and Pars differ.

Practical tips before a round

  • Check the exact tee color and gender-specific ratings before calculating.
  • Use one decimal place for ratings to avoid avoidable rounding drift.
  • When traveling, compare tee options by both yardage and slope—not yardage alone.
  • If your club posts official Course Handicap charts, treat those as the final authority for competition play.

FAQ

Is a higher slope rating always “harder”?

Harder for higher-handicap golfers relative to scratch golfers—yes. But daily weather, course setup, and green speed can still make one day play much tougher than another.

What is considered an average slope?

113 is the standard average slope.

Can I use this for tournament scoring?

This calculator is a strong estimate tool. For official events, always use your governing body's or club's posted values and procedures.
