cultist calculator

Cult Risk Estimator

Use this quick calculator to estimate how many high-control warning signs appear in a group. Scores are based on well-known coercion red flags (0 = none, 10 = severe).

Important: this tool is educational, not a diagnosis. If you feel unsafe, contact trusted professionals or support organizations immediately.

What the Cultist Calculator Measures

The cultist calculator is designed to help you spot patterns of high-control behavior in groups, communities, movements, or organizations. Many people ask, “Is this just intense commitment, or is this coercive control?” This tool gives you a structured way to think through that question.

Instead of relying on gut feeling alone, you can score specific warning signs: leader worship, social isolation, information filtering, fear-based obedience, financial exploitation, and barriers to leaving. The resulting score helps you decide whether you should monitor the situation, set boundaries, or seek outside help.

How the Score Works

The score runs from 0 to 100 and uses weighted categories. Some warning signs are treated as more serious than others because they tend to correlate with stronger coercive control.

  • 0–24 (Low): Few clear warning signs.
  • 25–49 (Caution): Multiple concerns worth discussing and documenting.
  • 50–74 (High Concern): Significant control patterns likely present.
  • 75–100 (Extreme Risk): Severe coercive dynamics; prioritize safety planning.

How to Use This Tool Well

1) Score behaviors, not beliefs

A group can hold unusual beliefs and still be non-coercive. Focus on what people are required to do, how dissent is handled, and whether members are free to leave without punishment.

2) Be honest and specific

If a category is unclear, use a midpoint score and revisit it after gathering more information. Keep a short timeline of incidents, messages, and policies you observe.

3) Recalculate over time

Control systems often escalate gradually. A score that rises month-over-month can be more important than a single data point.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Language that frames all outsiders as dangerous or evil.
  • Rules that separate members from family support systems.
  • Confession, humiliation, or “discipline” rituals used to enforce obedience.
  • Mandatory donations, unpaid labor, or debt tied to spiritual/moral worth.
  • Threats of social ruin, legal action, or spiritual doom if someone leaves.

If Your Score Is High

Take practical steps

  • Share concerns with a trusted person outside the group.
  • Secure copies of personal documents and financial records.
  • Reduce dependence on group-controlled housing, work, or communication channels.
  • Contact a licensed counselor, legal advocate, or support hotline in your region.

Prioritize safety over debate

If coercion is present, arguments rarely change the system quickly. Safety planning, documentation, and external support are usually more effective than trying to “win” internal disputes.

Limitations and Context

No calculator can replace professional assessment. This tool cannot diagnose mental health conditions, criminal conduct, or legal liability. It is a screening aid meant to increase awareness and promote informed decisions.

When in doubt, trust repeated patterns over one-time events. Healthy communities allow criticism, respect personal boundaries, and make leaving uncomplicated. Coercive groups do the opposite.
