What is a D9 chart (Navamsa)?
The D9 chart, also called the Navamsa chart, is one of the most important divisional charts in Vedic astrology. The Sanskrit word “Navamsa” means “one-ninth part.” Each 30° zodiac sign is divided into 9 equal parts of 3°20′ each, and each part maps to a D9 sign.

Calculation method used
1) Divide sign into 9 equal sections
Each sign is 30°. One Navamsa segment is 3°20′ (or 200 arcminutes). Your planet’s degree within the sign determines whether it falls in Navamsa 1 through 9.
2) Determine start sign by sign modality
The Navamsa sequence start depends on whether the natal sign is movable, fixed, or dual:
- Movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): start from the same sign.
- Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): start from the 9th sign from it.
- Dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): start from the 5th sign from it.
3) Advance through zodiac order
After identifying the start sign, move forward by Navamsa number minus one to get the final D9 sign. The calculator performs this automatically.
