How this Danish taxes calculator works

Denmark has a layered tax structure, and this calculator is designed to give you a practical estimate in seconds. It combines core tax elements that most salary earners care about: labour market contribution (AM-bidrag), municipal tax, state tax, optional church tax, and top tax for higher incomes.

The calculator is especially useful if you are evaluating a new job offer, planning your monthly budget, relocating to Denmark, or comparing salary packages across municipalities.

Included in this estimate

  • AM-bidrag deducted from gross income first.
  • Municipal tax based on your municipality's rate.
  • State bottom tax on taxable income.
  • Church tax (if applicable).
  • Top tax for income above your chosen threshold.
  • Personal allowance as a reduction to the base taxable amount.

Step-by-step tax logic

1) Labour market contribution (AM-bidrag)

The first deduction is AM-bidrag. In many salary cases this is 8% of gross income. The calculator subtracts this first, because several later tax calculations are based on income after AM-bidrag.

2) Build taxable income

After AM-bidrag, deductible pension contributions are subtracted. Then personal allowance is applied to produce the base amount taxed by municipal, state bottom, and church rates.

3) Apply municipal/state/church rates

These percentage rates are applied to your base taxable income. Municipal rates differ across Denmark, so adjust this value to your local municipality for better accuracy.

4) Check top tax threshold

If your income after AM-bidrag exceeds the top tax threshold, top tax is applied to the amount above that threshold.

Why this tool is useful

Many people know their gross salary but are less sure about net pay. A Danish tax estimate helps with:

  • Negotiating compensation packages.
  • Projecting monthly take-home pay.
  • Understanding how deductions and thresholds impact you.
  • Planning savings, housing costs, and long-term goals.

Important notes and limitations

This is a practical estimator, not an official SKAT assessment. Actual tax can differ due to tax cards, employment deductions, interest deductions, ATP, special allowances, benefits in kind, and yearly law updates.

For legal or filing decisions, always verify with official Danish tax guidance or a certified advisor.

Tips to improve your estimate accuracy

  • Use your actual municipality tax rate.
  • Set church tax to 0 if you are not paying church tax.
  • Include realistic pension deductions.
  • Update threshold/rate values each tax year.
  • Compare annual and monthly figures for budgeting.
