Dark Souls 3 Damage Estimator

Enter your weapon AR, target defenses, and absorptions to estimate per-hit damage.

Weapon Attack Rating (AR)

Total estimated damage will appear here.

Note: This is a practical estimator using a simplified defense step (AR - Defense, then absorption). It is great for quick comparisons between infusions, buffs, and split damage setups.

How this Dark Souls 3 damage calculator works

If you've ever compared a Heavy infusion against Refined, or tried to decide whether to buff your weapon with Gold Pine Bundle versus running a permanent elemental infusion, you already know one thing: AR alone can be misleading. This calculator helps by estimating real hit damage after enemy defense and absorption are applied.

In DS3, damage is split by type (physical, magic, fire, lightning, dark). Each type gets reduced separately. That means split damage can look high on paper but underperform if the target has good defense in multiple categories. Conversely, the right elemental setup can shred enemies that are weak to a specific type.

Damage model used in this tool

Step 1: Apply attack modifiers

Your entered AR is multiplied by motion value, critical modifier, global damage bonuses, and optional counter-hit bonus. This gives a per-type raw hit value for that attack instance.

Step 2: Subtract defense

For each damage type:

  • Post-defense damage = max(0, raw type damage - target type defense)

This is a simplified but useful approximation for fast build testing.

Step 3: Apply absorption

Absorption reduces what remains:

  • Final type damage = post-defense × (1 - absorption%)

Total damage is the sum of all type results.

When to use this calculator

  • Comparing infusions (Heavy, Sharp, Refined, Dark, Chaos, Lightning, Crystal)
  • Testing weapon buffs and ring setups
  • Planning PvE routes around enemy weaknesses
  • Checking whether split damage helps or hurts versus a specific boss or player

Quick optimization tips for DS3

1) Match damage type to target weakness

Some enemies heavily resist fire but are weak to lightning, or vice versa. A smaller AR number in the right type can outperform a bigger one in the wrong type.

2) Be careful with split damage

Split AR can be strong, but every type has to pass through its own defense and absorption checks. If both chunks are heavily mitigated, you lose efficiency.

3) Motion value matters more than many players think

Heavy attacks, weapon arts, and different weapon classes use different motion values. If your goal is burst damage, optimize around the attacks you actually land, not only listed AR.

4) Counter windows are huge for thrust builds

If you frequently trade on counter timing with thrust attacks, adding counter bonus can significantly change which setup is best.

Example use case

Suppose you're testing a quality build with a straight sword:

  • Setup A: 420 pure physical AR
  • Setup B: 300 physical + 170 lightning AR

Against a target with high physical absorption and low lightning absorption, Setup B may win despite lower physical AR. Against an enemy with strong lightning resist, Setup A could come out ahead. The calculator lets you check both instantly.

FAQ

Is this a perfect frame-by-frame simulation?

No. It is designed as a practical estimate for build decisions. It captures the key ideas—split damage handling, defense, absorption, and attack modifiers—without requiring full internal game data.

Can I use this for PvP?

Yes, as a comparative tool. Enter likely player defenses/absorptions and compare setups quickly.

Why not use AR only?

AR does not account for enemy mitigation. Real performance depends on what survives defense and absorption filters.
