What is a Dasha and Mahadasha?
In Vedic astrology, a Dasha is a planetary period that describes the timing of life themes. A Mahadasha is the major period of a planet, and within it are smaller sub-periods called Antardasha. Together, they help astrologers understand when specific types of events are more likely to surface, such as career movement, relationship changes, spiritual growth, or financial shifts.
How this calculator works
This calculator follows the traditional Vimshottari Dasha system. Vimshottari is based on a 120-year cycle distributed among nine planetary rulers:
- Ketu - 7 years
- Venus - 20 years
- Sun - 6 years
- Moon - 10 years
- Mars - 7 years
- Rahu - 18 years
- Jupiter - 16 years
- Saturn - 19 years
- Mercury - 17 years
Your starting Mahadasha at birth is determined by the Moon's nakshatra. The remaining fraction of that nakshatra decides how much of the first Mahadasha is left at birth. After that, the standard planetary sequence continues.
Inputs you need for better accuracy
1) Birth date and time
These define the timeline anchor. If you do not know the exact birth time, you can still generate a rough sequence, but transitions may shift.
2) Moon longitude
The Moon longitude determines your birth nakshatra and opening Mahadasha balance. For precise results, use a reliable astrology software output with sidereal settings aligned to your preferred ayanamsa.
3) Time horizon
You can display a shorter forecast window (for example 30 or 60 years) or the full 120-year cycle.
How to interpret your Mahadasha timeline
Think of Mahadasha as the broad chapter and Antardasha as the specific paragraph. If you are in Jupiter Mahadasha, growth, learning, mentors, belief systems, and expansion may become prominent. During a Saturn Antardasha inside Jupiter Mahadasha, practical responsibilities and discipline can become the pathway through which Jupiter's themes unfold.
- Mahadasha lord: Core life direction for the period.
- Antardasha lord: Immediate trigger and texture.
- Natal chart strength: Decides outcome quality.
- Transits: Time the activation of specific events.
Practical usage tips
- Use this calculator to map major timing phases before making long-range decisions.
- Check transition dates; period boundaries often feel like life turning points.
- Combine Dasha timing with houses, yogas, and current transits for deeper interpretation.
- Review past events against past dashas to calibrate your personal chart pattern.
