DHL Dimensional Weight Calculator
Use this tool to estimate dimensional (volumetric) weight, chargeable weight, and totals for DHL shipments.
How DHL dimensional weight works
DHL and most major carriers don’t price shipments by scale weight alone. They also measure the amount of space your package takes in the aircraft or truck. This is called dimensional weight (also known as volumetric weight or dim weight). If your carton is very large but light, you often pay based on dimensional weight, not actual weight.
In simple terms, DHL compares two values:
- Actual weight: what the package physically weighs.
- Dimensional weight: what the package should weigh based on volume and divisor.
The higher value becomes your chargeable weight.
DHL dim weight formula
Metric formula (cm/kg)
For many DHL Express calculations, the metric formula is:
Dimensional Weight (kg) = Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 5000
Example: 50 × 40 × 30 cm = 60,000 cm³. Divide by 5000 and you get 12 kg dimensional weight.
Imperial formula (in/lb)
In inch/pound contexts, a common divisor is 139:
Dimensional Weight (lb) = Length × Width × Height (in) ÷ 139
If your account, lane, or service uses a different divisor, enter that number in the calculator.
Step-by-step example
Suppose you ship 3 identical cartons:
- Dimensions per carton: 48 × 32 × 28 cm
- Actual weight per carton: 7.3 kg
- Divisor: 5000
First, calculate dimensional weight per carton:
(48 × 32 × 28) ÷ 5000 = 8.60 kg
Compare to actual weight (7.3 kg). Since 8.6 kg is higher, chargeable weight per carton is 8.6 kg (or 9.0 kg if rounded up to the nearest 0.5 kg rule).
For 3 cartons, multiply the chargeable weight by 3 for the shipment total.
Why your billed weight can be higher than expected
- Oversized packaging: Empty space inside boxes drives volume up fast.
- Carrier rounding rules: Some billing systems round up to increments.
- Measurement differences: Carriers use official scanned dimensions.
- Service differences: Divisors and policies can vary by contract or route.
How to lower DHL dimensional charges
1) Reduce empty space
Use right-sized cartons and avoid “one box fits all” packaging. Even a small reduction in each side can significantly lower dim weight.
2) Re-check packing orientation
Sometimes rotating products changes the required box size. Train packing teams to test two or three configurations before sealing.
3) Use poly mailers when possible
For soft goods (apparel, textiles), mailers can cut dimensional footprint compared with rigid cartons.
4) Audit your top SKUs monthly
Focus on high-volume products first. Small per-package savings compound quickly over hundreds or thousands of shipments.
Important notes before you rate a shipment
- This calculator is for planning and estimation.
- Final billed weight depends on DHL scan data, contract terms, and service rules.
- Always confirm the correct divisor and rounding policy with your DHL account rep or official tariff guide.
FAQ
Is dimensional weight always used by DHL?
It is commonly used for air express and many parcel shipments. DHL compares actual and dimensional values, then bills the greater one.
Can I use a custom divisor?
Yes. This calculator lets you enter any divisor value so you can match contract-specific or lane-specific terms.
Does this tool handle multiple boxes?
Yes. Enter the number of identical packages, and the tool calculates per-package and total shipment chargeable weight.
