What is a diameter?
The diameter of a circle is the straight-line distance from one side of the circle to the other, passing through the center point. It is one of the most common measurements used in geometry, engineering, and everyday tasks like sizing pipes, wheels, lids, and circular tables.
If you know the radius, the diameter is easy: just double it. But in many real situations, you may only know circumference (distance around the circle) or area (space inside the circle). This tool handles all three cases.
Diameter formulas you should know
1) Diameter from radius
Radius is the distance from the center to the edge. Since diameter spans the whole circle through the center, it is exactly twice the radius:
d = 2r
2) Diameter from circumference
Circumference and diameter are connected by pi (π). If C = πd, then:
d = C / π
3) Diameter from area
Area of a circle is A = πr². Solve for radius first, then multiply by 2:
d = 2√(A / π)

Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing radius and diameter (diameter is always double the radius).
