What Is a Differential Ratio?
The differential ratio (also called axle ratio or final drive ratio) tells you how many times the driveshaft turns for one full turn of the axle/wheels. A ratio of 3.73:1 means the driveshaft rotates 3.73 times for every 1 wheel rotation.
This number has a big effect on acceleration, towing strength, cruising RPM, fuel economy, and how your vehicle feels in daily driving.
How to Calculate Differential Ratio
1) From Gear Teeth (best method)
Use this formula:
Differential Ratio = Ring Gear Teeth ÷ Pinion Gear Teeth
Example: 41 ring teeth and 11 pinion teeth gives 41 ÷ 11 = 3.727, commonly called 3.73.
2) From a Rotation Test
If you do not know tooth counts, you can measure driveshaft turns and wheel turns. The calculator divides driveshaft turns by wheel turns. If only one wheel is turned on an open differential, the tool applies a correction factor automatically when you check the box.
How to Read Your Result
- Higher numerical ratio (e.g., 4.10, 4.56): quicker acceleration, better towing, higher RPM at highway speed.
- Lower numerical ratio (e.g., 3.08, 3.23): lower cruise RPM, often better highway economy, less low-speed torque multiplication.
