D&D 2024 Hit Points Calculator
Use this calculator to estimate your character’s maximum HP using 2024 class hit dice, Constitution, level, and optional bonuses like the Tough feat.
How this D&D 2024 HP calculator works
This tool follows the 2024 character HP progression model used by the standard classes:
- Level 1 HP = maximum Hit Die + Constitution modifier
- Levels 2+ = either fixed hit point gain (recommended) or expected rolled gain + Constitution modifier
- Optional additions include Tough feat, extra HP per level from features, and flat bonuses
Quick HP rules recap (2024)
1) Start with class Hit Die
Your class determines your Hit Die size. Tough front-line classes use larger dice, while full casters often use smaller dice.
2) Add Constitution modifier every level
Constitution is one of the most important survivability stats. Even a +1 or +2 modifier makes a noticeable difference by mid levels.
3) Pick fixed or rolled gain after level 1
Most players use fixed HP for consistency. Rolling introduces volatility; this calculator offers an expected-value estimate for planning.
Class hit die reference
| Class | Hit Die | Fixed HP per level (2+) |
|---|---|---|
| Barbarian | d12 | 7 |
| Fighter, Paladin, Ranger | d10 | 6 |
| Bard, Cleric, Druid, Monk, Rogue, Warlock | d8 | 5 |
| Sorcerer, Wizard | d6 | 4 |
Formula used by this calculator
Con modifier: floor((CON - 10) / 2)
Base HP: (Level 1 max die + CON mod) + (Level - 1) × (gain method + CON mod)
Total Max HP: Base HP + (Extra HP per level × Level) + Tough bonus + Flat bonus
Current combat pool: Total Max HP + Temporary HP
Worked example
Level 7 Paladin, Constitution 16 (+3), fixed HP, Tough feat:
- Level 1: d10 max (10) + 3 = 13
- Levels 2–7: (6 + 3) × 6 = 54
- Tough feat: +2 × 7 = 14
- Total Max HP = 81
Optimization tips for more survivability
- Boost Constitution early if you expect lots of combat.
- Use fixed HP if you want reliable durability.
- Track temporary HP separately; it stacks with damage soak, not with itself.
- Review class features and feats that grant per-level HP bonuses.
FAQ
Does this include temporary HP in max HP?
No. Temporary HP is shown as a separate add-on to your current combat pool.
Can I use this for multiclass characters?
This page is built for single-class progression. For multiclassing, calculate each class level segment separately and sum them.
What if my Constitution modifier changes later?
When your CON modifier increases, your HP increases by 1 per character level for each +1 mod gained. Recalculate with your new Constitution score.
