What this DnD Stats Calculator does

This tool is built for Dungeons & Dragons 5e players who want fast and accurate number crunching during character creation. Instead of manually converting each ability score into a modifier and then into a saving throw, you can enter your scores once and get everything at a glance.

  • Ability modifier for each of the six core stats (STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA)
  • Proficiency bonus based on your level
  • Saving throw totals with optional proficiency checkboxes
  • Point-buy total when all scores are between 8 and 15
  • A one-click stat roller using 4d6 drop lowest

How ability modifiers are calculated

In 5e, the formula for any ability modifier is:

Modifier = floor((Score - 10) / 2)

That means:

  • 8 or 9 gives a -1 modifier
  • 10 or 11 gives a +0 modifier
  • 12 or 13 gives a +1 modifier
  • 14 or 15 gives a +2 modifier
  • 16 or 17 gives a +3 modifier

These modifiers affect attacks, skill checks, spell save DCs, and many class features. So choosing your stat spread well has a huge effect on your character’s performance.

Point buy, standard array, and rolling

Point buy (27 points)

Point buy gives you control and balance. In most campaigns, you can assign scores from 8 to 15 before racial/lineage bonuses. Costs increase nonlinearly, so high stats are expensive.

Standard array

The classic standard array is 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. It’s quick, fair, and great for new players.

Rolling stats (4d6 drop lowest)

If your group prefers randomness, click the roll button. It rolls six scores using the popular method of 4d6 and dropping the lowest die each time. This can produce both heroic and awkward characters, which many tables enjoy for roleplay reasons.

Tips for better stat allocation

  • Prioritize your class’s primary ability: STR/DEX for martial classes, casting stat for spellcasters.
  • Don’t ignore Constitution: HP and concentration saves matter for nearly every build.
  • Plan ASIs and feats: Starting with odd scores can be useful if you already know your level-up path.
  • Check saving throw proficiency: Mark your class proficiencies in this calculator for accurate totals.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include racial or lineage bonuses?

Yes—if you already know your final ability scores, enter them directly. The calculator simply processes the numbers you provide.

Is this calculator only for 5e?

This implementation is tuned for D&D 5e style modifiers and proficiency progression. Other systems may use different formulas.

Why does point buy show unavailable for some stats?

Official 5e point buy only prices scores from 8 to 15 before bonuses. If any score falls outside that range, the calculator flags point-buy cost as unavailable.
