Dog Raw Diet Calculator
Estimate your dog’s daily raw food amount and split it into common prey-model or BARF components.
How this dog raw diet calculator works
The calculator starts with one core formula: daily food = body weight × feeding percentage. That total is then split into common raw feeding categories such as muscle meat, edible bone, liver, and other secreting organs. If you choose BARF, a vegetable/extras portion is included as well.
It’s designed as a practical planning tool for home feeders who want a fast estimate before building shopping lists or meal prep batches.
What you enter
- Body weight in pounds or kilograms.
- Feeding percentage based on age and activity (or your custom percentage).
- Ratio model (PMR or BARF style split).
- Meals per day so you can portion each meal quickly.
Choosing the right feeding percentage
Most adult dogs do well somewhere around 2% to 3% of body weight daily, while puppies usually need a much higher percentage due to growth. The right amount is always individual, so use the calculator as a starting point and adjust based on body condition, stool quality, energy, and weight trend over time.
Quick guideline ranges
- Adult sedentary: around 2.0%
- Adult average: around 2.5%
- Adult active: around 3.0%
- Weight-loss phase: around 1.5% (with vet support)
- Puppies: often 4% to 8% depending on age and growth stage
PMR vs BARF ratio models
PMR (Prey Model Raw) 80/10/5/5
This model focuses on animal-based ingredients:
- 80% muscle meat (including heart/tripe in many plans)
- 10% edible bone
- 5% liver
- 5% other secreting organ (kidney, spleen, pancreas, etc.)
BARF-style 70/10/5/5/10
This model keeps core animal components while reserving a portion for plant matter or extras:
- 70% muscle meat
- 10% edible bone
- 5% liver
- 5% other secreting organ
- 10% vegetables/fruits/extras
Example: using the calculator
If your dog weighs 50 lb and you choose an adult average intake of 2.5%, the tool estimates total daily food and breaks it into grams and ounces for each category. You also get a per-meal amount if feeding twice daily. This makes weekly batching much easier when buying bulk meat and organs.
How to transition a dog to raw feeding
- Transition gradually over 7–14 days for many dogs.
- Start with simpler proteins and add variety later.
- Introduce organs slowly to avoid digestive upset.
- Use edible bone levels carefully; too much can cause hard stools.
- Track stool, weight, coat, and energy to guide adjustments.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Feeding only muscle meat and skipping organs.
- Using too much liver or too much bone.
- Changing portions too aggressively without tracking.
- Ignoring life stage changes (puppy to adult, active to senior).
- Skipping food safety practices during prep and storage.
Important safety and nutrition note
This calculator provides estimates, not a medical diagnosis or a complete veterinary nutrition plan. Dogs with kidney disease, pancreatitis, endocrine disorders, allergies, or other chronic conditions may need specialized formulation. For long-term feeding, consult your veterinarian or a qualified canine nutrition professional.
