dutch salary tax calculator

Estimate Your Dutch Net Salary

Use this calculator to estimate annual and monthly take-home pay in the Netherlands. It applies Box 1 rates and common tax credits in a simplified way.

All values are annualized estimates. Actual payroll can differ per payroll system, deductions, and personal situation.

How this Dutch salary tax calculator works

The Netherlands uses a progressive tax system. That means the higher your taxable income, the higher the marginal tax rate on the top portion of your income. Payroll tax calculations also include tax credits that can significantly reduce what you actually pay.

This calculator gives you a practical estimate by combining:

  • Gross salary components (monthly salary, holiday allowance, bonus, extra salary months)
  • A simplified taxable income estimate
  • Box 1 progressive tax brackets
  • General tax credit (algemene heffingskorting)
  • Labour tax credit (arbeidskorting)

1) Build annual gross income

We first calculate your annual gross package from monthly salary multiplied by salary payments per year, then add holiday allowance and annual bonus.

2) Estimate taxable income

Your employee pension contribution is treated as a reduction in taxable income in this model. If you enable the 30% ruling option, 30% of gross income is treated as untaxed (simplified approach).

3) Apply Box 1 tax rates and credits

After calculating gross income tax, the calculator estimates two major tax credits and subtracts them. This gives your estimated total annual tax and net take-home income.

Dutch payroll tax basics (quick overview)

Dutch employment income usually falls in Box 1. Payroll withholding (loonheffing) combines wage tax and social insurance contributions. For many employees, payroll withholding is close to final tax due, though annual filing may still adjust the result.

Tax brackets used in this tool

  • Below AOW age: 36.97% up to €75,518, then 49.50% above that.
  • AOW age reached (simplified): lower first-bracket rate, then standard higher rates.

Rates and thresholds can change each tax year. Use this as a planning estimate, not as legal or fiscal advice.

What is included (and what is not)

Included

  • Gross salary and holiday pay modeling
  • Bonus input
  • Pension deduction input
  • AOW-age toggle
  • 30% ruling toggle (simplified treatment)

Not fully included

  • Exact payroll-specific pension franchise calculations
  • Sector-specific CAO rules
  • Partner/family tax effects and all allowances (toeslagen)
  • Special situations like expat partial non-residency details
  • Municipal taxes or private deductions outside payroll scope

Example scenario

Suppose your monthly gross salary is €4,200, paid 12 times per year, with 8% holiday allowance and no bonus. You can quickly see how your estimated taxable income, tax credits, annual tax burden, and monthly net salary change when you adjust pension contribution or enable the 30% ruling.

This is useful when comparing job offers in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Eindhoven, or remote contracts where compensation structure differs.

Tips to improve net pay awareness

  • Compare offers on annual gross package, not only monthly gross.
  • Check whether holiday allowance is included in quoted salary.
  • Understand pension contribution impact on net income.
  • Ask HR whether payroll already applies labour and general tax credits.
  • Review final annual tax return to reconcile withholding vs actual due.
