How to use this duty calculator in Canada

If you buy products from outside Canada, your final cost is often higher than the checkout price. This duty calculator gives you a quick estimate of what you may owe when your package arrives.

Enter the item value, shipping, insurance, and where the package is being delivered. Then choose a typical product category duty rate or enter your own rate if you know it from the tariff classification.

What costs are included

  • Customs duty: A percentage based on product type and origin.
  • Sales tax: GST/HST/PST/QST estimate based on destination province.
  • Brokerage fee: Carrier or customs broker processing fee (if applicable).
  • Total landed cost: Your all-in estimated amount.

Important Canadian import basics

1) Product classification matters

The duty rate is tied to your product’s HS tariff classification. Two similar items can have different rates. If precision matters, verify your tariff line before purchasing.

2) Origin can reduce duty

Goods that qualify under CUSMA (Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement) may be duty-free. Taxes can still apply even when duty is reduced to zero.

3) De minimis courier thresholds

For eligible courier shipments from the U.S. or Mexico, Canada may waive duty up to certain thresholds. In simple terms, duty is commonly waived up to CAD 150 and taxes may be waived up to CAD 40. This calculator applies those rules when you enable the checkbox.

Example calculation

Suppose you import clothing into Ontario:

  • Item value: CAD 200
  • Shipping: CAD 30
  • Insurance: CAD 0
  • Duty rate: 18%
  • Province tax estimate: 13%

The tool first calculates customs value (230), then duty, then tax on value plus duty, then adds brokerage. This gives you a realistic estimate of your final delivered cost.

Tips to avoid surprises at delivery

  • Ask the seller for full product details and country of origin.
  • Check whether shipping is DDP (duties paid) or DAP (you pay on arrival).
  • Keep invoices and payment proof available.
  • For expensive shipments, confirm HS code and rate in advance.
