How to use this duty calculator in Ghana
If you import goods into Ghana, one of the biggest planning mistakes is underestimating total charges at the port. This calculator helps you estimate import duty in Ghana by starting from the CIF value (Cost + Insurance + Freight), then adding major taxes and levies to project your final landed cost.
- Enter your FOB, freight, and insurance in USD.
- Use your expected customs exchange rate in GHS.
- Apply the right duty and levy rates for your product class.
- Click Calculate Duty to get a full tax breakdown.
Understanding common import charges in Ghana
1) CIF Value
CIF is the base customs value for most imports. It includes the price of goods (FOB), shipping cost (freight), and insurance. Most calculations begin from this number.
2) Import Duty
Import duty is applied as a percentage of CIF. The exact rate depends on your product's tariff classification (HS code). Rates can vary significantly, so classification accuracy is very important.
3) Excise Duty
Some products such as specific beverages, tobacco, petroleum products, and selected goods may attract excise. If your goods do not attract excise, set this field to 0%.
4) VAT and Statutory Levies
VAT, NHIL, GETFund levy, and COVID-19 levy are generally computed on a broader tax base (not only CIF). This means taxes can stack, increasing total payable charges beyond the initial duty amount.
5) Other Port and Agency Costs
You may still have separate costs outside this calculator, including terminal handling, shipping line fees, demurrage, customs broker fees, and storage charges. Add known fixed costs to the Other Fixed Charges field for better budgeting.
Formula used by this calculator
This page uses a simplified planning model commonly used by importers:
- CIF (USD) = FOB + Freight + Insurance
- CIF (GHS) = CIF (USD) × Exchange Rate
- Import Duty = CIF (GHS) × Duty Rate
- Excise = (CIF + Import Duty) × Excise Rate
- VAT Base = CIF + Import Duty + Excise + Processing Fee + Special Levy
- VAT / NHIL / GETFund / COVID levy = VAT Base × respective rate
- Total Duties & Taxes = Sum of all computed charges + other fixed charges
- Landed Cost = CIF (GHS) + Total Duties & Taxes
Worked example (quick estimate)
Suppose you are importing equipment with FOB of $10,000, freight of $1,200, insurance of $300, and exchange rate of 15.20. If your duty rate is 20% and all standard levies apply, your payable amount can become much higher than expected from duty alone. This is exactly why a complete breakdown is useful before you ship.
Tips to reduce surprise costs
- Confirm your HS code with a qualified customs broker before shipment.
- Verify if your product qualifies for exemptions, reduced duty, or special treatment.
- Track exchange rate updates, because valuation can change your final payable amount.
- Clear quickly to avoid storage and demurrage penalties.
- Keep invoices and shipping documents consistent to prevent valuation disputes.
