each way bet calculator

Each-Way Bet Calculator

Calculate total return and profit for win, place-only, or losing outcomes.

Example: 1/5 odds means place return uses one-fifth of the win odds profit.

What is an each-way bet?

An each-way bet is really two bets combined:

  • Win bet — your selection must finish first.
  • Place bet — your selection must finish in the paid places (for example top 2, top 3, top 4, etc., depending on race terms).

If you stake £10 each-way, your total outlay is £20: £10 on the win and £10 on the place. That’s why each-way bets are popular in horse racing and golf—there is still a chance to get a return even if your selection doesn’t win but still places.

How each-way payout is calculated

1) Win part

The win part is paid at full odds if your selection wins.

2) Place part

The place part is paid at a reduced fraction of the win odds, such as:

  • 1/4 odds
  • 1/5 odds
  • 1/3 odds

Place terms are set by the bookmaker and can change based on event type and number of runners.

Core formulas used in this calculator

  • Total stake = stake per part × 2
  • Place decimal odds = 1 + (decimal odds − 1) × (place numerator ÷ place denominator)
  • Total return = win return + place return
  • Net profit/loss = total return − total stake

Worked examples

Example A: Selection wins

Stake £10 each-way at 8/1 with 1/5 place terms:

  • Decimal odds = 9.00
  • Place decimal odds = 1 + (9.00 - 1) × 1/5 = 2.60
  • Win return = £10 × 9.00 = £90.00
  • Place return = £10 × 2.60 = £26.00
  • Total return = £116.00
  • Total stake = £20.00
  • Net profit = £96.00

Example B: Selection places but does not win

  • Win return = £0
  • Place return = £26.00
  • Total return = £26.00
  • Total stake = £20.00
  • Net profit = £6.00

Example C: Selection loses

  • Win return = £0
  • Place return = £0
  • Total return = £0
  • Net loss = £20.00

When an each-way bet can be useful

Each-way bets can be attractive when:

  • You like a runner at bigger odds but still think it has a strong chance to place.
  • The bookmaker offers extra places.
  • You want less variance than a pure win-only bet.

They are less attractive when odds are very short, because the place portion may not offer enough value.

Common mistakes bettors make

  • Forgetting stake is doubled: £10 each-way is £20 total risk.
  • Ignoring place terms: 1/4 and 1/5 place terms can significantly change returns.
  • Mixing odds formats: decimal and fractional represent the same value differently.
  • Not checking market rules: non-runners, dead-heats, and rule deductions can alter payouts.

Quick FAQ

Does this calculator support both decimal and fractional odds?

Yes. Select your odds format, then enter values such as 8/1 or 9.00.

Can an each-way bet still lose if my pick places?

Yes, depending on odds and place terms. Some place payouts may not fully cover your total stake.

Why does my sportsbook payout look different?

Bookmaker-specific rules can apply: dead-heats, non-runner deductions, and special promotions can change the final return.

Final note

Use this each-way bet calculator as a planning tool before placing bets. It helps compare outcomes quickly and makes bankroll decisions clearer. Always gamble responsibly and only risk money you can afford to lose.
