What is an each-way bet?

An each-way bet is really two bets combined:

  • Win bet — your selection must finish 1st.
  • Place bet — your selection must finish within the bookmaker’s paid places (for example, top 3 or top 4).

Because it contains two separate bets, your total outlay is double your stated stake per part. If you place £10 each-way, that means £10 on the win and £10 on the place, for a total stake of £20.

How this each way bets calculator works

This calculator uses the standard approach used by most sportsbooks for straightforward each-way bets:

  • Converts your odds to decimal form (if needed).
  • Applies place terms to the win odds to get place odds.
  • Calculates returns for win and place portions separately.
  • Combines them into total return and net profit/loss.

Inputs explained

  • Stake per part: stake applied to each side of the each-way bet.
  • Odds: either fractional (like 8/1) or decimal (like 9.0).
  • Place terms: fraction of win odds paid on the place part, such as 1/5 or 1/4.
  • Places paid: how many finishing positions count as a place.
  • Finish position: where your selection actually finished.

Formula used in the calculator

Total stake = Stake per part × 2

Decimal win odds = (fractional odds) + 1

Decimal place odds = 1 + ((Decimal win odds − 1) × Place fraction)

If selection wins: Total return = Win return + Place return

If selection places (not 1st): Total return = Place return only

If unplaced: Total return = 0

Profit/Loss = Total return − Total stake

Quick examples

Example 1: Horse wins

Suppose you bet £10 each-way at 8/1, place terms 1/5, 3 places paid, and your horse finishes 1st.

  • Total stake = £20
  • Win return = £10 × 9.0 = £90
  • Place odds = 1 + (8 × 1/5) = 2.6
  • Place return = £10 × 2.6 = £26
  • Total return = £116
  • Profit = £96

Example 2: Horse places but does not win

Same bet details, but your horse finishes 2nd:

  • Win part loses
  • Place return = £26
  • Total stake = £20
  • Profit = £6

Example 3: Horse unplaced

If your horse finishes outside the paid places, both portions lose:

  • Total return = £0
  • Profit/Loss = −£20

Common each-way betting mistakes

  • Forgetting total stake doubles: each-way bets always include two parts.
  • Ignoring place terms: 1/4 and 1/5 place terms produce very different outcomes.
  • Assuming all races pay the same places: this varies by event and bookmaker promotions.
  • Mixing odds formats: decimal and fractional odds must be handled correctly.

Important real-world caveats

This calculator is intentionally clean and simple. Some real sportsbook settlements can include factors like Rule 4 deductions, dead heats, non-runners, or special enhanced-place promotions. Those can change final payouts.

For advanced scenarios, check your bookmaker’s official settlement rules for your specific market.
