FIDE Rating Change Calculator
Estimate your rating change, expected score, and tournament performance rating based on FIDE-style Elo math.
What this fide calculator does
This calculator helps you estimate how your chess rating may move after a rated event. It follows the Elo-style logic used in FIDE calculations: your rating change depends on your expected score versus the rating strength of your opponents, then scaled by your K-factor.
In plain terms: if you score better than expected, your rating goes up; if you score worse than expected, it goes down. The size of the change depends on how surprising your result was and how large your K-factor is.
How the math works
1) Expected score per game
For each game, your expected score is calculated from the rating difference:
Expected = 1 / (1 + 10^((Opponent - You) / 400))
- If both ratings are equal, expected score is about 0.50.
- If you are higher rated, your expectation rises above 0.50.
- If you are lower rated, your expectation drops below 0.50.
2) Total rating change
Over all games in your event:
Rating Change = K × (Actual Score − Expected Score)
The calculator sums expected score and actual score across the list of opponents/results you enter. It then gives your estimated new rating.
3) Performance rating estimate
Performance rating is a way to describe how strongly you played in one event. This page provides a common Elo-based estimate using your score percentage and average opponent rating. It is useful for quick planning and self-review.
Choosing the right K-factor
K-factor controls how “sensitive” your rating is:
- K = 40: larger movement, usually for newer/developing players.
- K = 20: moderate movement, common for many active players.
- K = 10: smaller movement, often for experienced or high-rated players.
Always verify your specific status and regulations for your federation and the time control (standard, rapid, blitz), since rating pools and update rules can differ.
Quick usage guide
- Enter your current rating.
- Select the K-factor that applies to you.
- Paste opponent ratings separated by commas.
- Enter your results in the same order.
- Click Calculate to view totals and per-game expectations.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a different number of ratings and results.
- Mixing result formats (for example “draw” instead of 0.5 or D).
- Using the wrong K-factor.
- Expecting this estimate to include every official edge case in FIDE processing.
Final note
This tool is designed for practical estimates and learning. Official rating lists are published by governing bodies and can include specific policy details, rounding behavior, and administrative timing. Use this calculator as a planning assistant, not as a replacement for official published updates.
