How this FIDE rating calculator works
This tool estimates rating change using the standard Elo expectation model used by FIDE. For each game, you compare your actual result (win = 1, draw = 0.5, loss = 0) against your expected score based on the rating difference between you and your opponent.
Your total tournament change is then based on all games combined, scaled by your K-factor.
The rating formula
Rating Change (ΔR) = K × (S − E)
- K = development coefficient (commonly 40, 20, or 10)
- S = your actual score in the tournament
- E = your expected score, which is the sum of expected points from each game
Expected score in one game
The expected score against one opponent is:
Egame = 1 / (1 + 10(Ropp − Ryou)/400)
If your actual score is higher than expected, you gain rating. If lower, you lose rating.
Choosing the right K-factor
In practical use, players usually work with one of these K-values:
- K = 40: often for new players and many juniors
- K = 20: common default for established players below 2400
- K = 10: usually for players who have reached 2400 and remain established
Always verify your official status with current FIDE regulations, since policy details can change.
