What are FINA points?

FINA points (now often called World Aquatics points) are a scoring system used to compare swims from different events. A sprint freestyle and a distance butterfly can’t be compared directly by time alone, so points create a common scale.

In simple terms: the closer your time is to the event’s benchmark time, the higher your score. A performance equal to the benchmark gives about 1000 points, faster swims score above 1000, and slower swims score below 1000.

How this calculator works

Formula used

This tool uses the widely applied cubic model:

Points = 1000 × (Base Time ÷ Swim Time)3

  • Base Time = reference best time for your selected event, gender, and pool course.
  • Swim Time = your entered race time.

If you provide a target score, the calculator also solves the formula in reverse to estimate your required time.

Important note on precision

Official federations periodically update point tables and reference marks. This page is excellent for planning, comparing, and tracking training progress, but always verify final competition scoring against your meet software or federation publication.

How to use the calculator effectively

  • Select your course (LCM or SCM).
  • Choose your category and event.
  • Enter your race time in a valid format.
  • Optionally set a target point score to get a goal time.
  • Press Calculate Points.

How to interpret your score

Point values are most useful for comparing your own swims across strokes and distances. Typical ranges vary by age, level, and country, but this quick guide helps:

  • 300–450: Developing competitive level
  • 450–600: Strong club performance
  • 600–750: High regional / national-age-group quality
  • 750+: Elite-national to international territory (context dependent)

Use trends over time rather than a single score. A steady rise in points across a season is one of the best indicators your training is working.

Practical training applications

1) Event selection

Swim your key races, convert each to points, and identify your strongest events objectively. Sometimes your “best” event by ranking is not your best event by points.

2) Goal setting

Pick a target points score (for example, 650) and use the reverse calculation to get a realistic target time. This gives you a clear benchmark for race-pace sets and taper blocks.

3) Progress checks

Track points every 4–6 weeks. If points are flat while training load rises, you may need recovery, technical adjustments, or race strategy tuning.

FAQ

Can I compare LCM and SCM points directly?

You can compare them roughly, but it is better to compare within the same course because turns, pacing, and race dynamics differ.

Why can two swimmers with similar times have very different points?

Each event has different benchmark times. A 1-second drop in one event may produce a larger points change than in another.

Is this calculator good for masters swimming?

Yes, for broad performance tracking. For official masters ranking systems, use the governing body’s exact point rules when required.

Bottom line

If you want one number that summarizes race quality across different events, FINA points are extremely useful. Use this calculator to set goals, compare swims, and monitor improvement with a consistent framework.
