What Is a Final Drive Gear Ratio?
The final drive ratio is the reduction ratio between the driveshaft (or transmission output) and the wheels. In most vehicles, it is created by the differential ring-and-pinion gear set. This number tells you how many times the pinion (input) must rotate to turn the ring gear (and axle) one full turn.
A higher numerical ratio (like 4.10:1) generally improves acceleration but raises engine RPM at highway speed. A lower numerical ratio (like 3.08:1) typically lowers cruising RPM and can improve fuel economy, but may reduce low-speed punch.

The basic final drive ratio formula is:
Final Drive Ratio = Ring Gear Teeth ÷ Pinion Gear Teeth
Example: 41 ring teeth and 11 pinion teeth gives: 41 ÷ 11 = 3.73, often shown as 3.73:1.
Optional RPM and Speed Estimates
If you provide a transmission gear ratio and tire diameter, the calculator also computes:
- Overall Drive Ratio = Final Drive Ratio × Transmission Gear Ratio
- Estimated RPM at a given speed using the common constant 336: RPM = (MPH × Overall Ratio × 336) ÷ Tire Diameter
- Estimated speed at a given RPM: MPH = (RPM × Tire Diameter) ÷ (Overall Ratio × 336)
When to Use a Higher vs. Lower Final Drive Ratio

Practical Example
Suppose you have a 3.73 final drive, a 0.78 overdrive gear, and 27-inch tires. Your overall ratio in top gear is:
3.73 × 0.78 = 2.9094
At 70 mph, estimated engine RPM is:
(70 × 2.9094 × 336) ÷ 27 ≈ 2,534 RPM
That gives you a quick way to compare different gear swaps before spending money.
