FM Coach Star Estimate Tool

Use this calculator to estimate how strong a coach is for a specific training unit in Football Manager style saves.

Examples: Attacking, Defending, Technical, Fitness, or Goalkeeping depending on the unit.

Used for a simple workload adjustment. Lower players-per-coach ratios usually train better.

What this FM coach calculator does

Building a strong backroom team can be the difference between a squad that plateaus and a squad that develops every season. This FM coach calculator gives you a practical estimate of a coach’s training impact by combining the core staff attributes and a light workload factor.

It is not a perfect mirror of the game engine, but it is useful for quick decisions: hiring staff, assigning coaches to units, and comparing whether a specialist with weaker personality attributes is actually better than a well-rounded generalist.

How the score is estimated

The calculator uses a weighted score with two layers:

  • Base coaching quality: Relevant coaching attribute + Determination + Discipline + Motivating
  • Workload adjustment: a modifier based on players per coach in the unit

The simplified formula is:

Base Score = (Relevant Attribute × 2) + Average(Determination, Discipline, Motivating)
Base Stars = Base Score ÷ 12
Final Stars = Base Stars × Workload Factor

Workload Factor increases slightly when each coach handles fewer players, and decreases when the unit is overcrowded. The final result is clamped between 0.5 and 5 stars for a realistic display range.

How to use it in your save

1) Match the correct training area

First, pick the unit you are evaluating (for example, Attacking or Fitness). Then input the matching coaching attribute for that category. A coach with elite Defending won’t necessarily be elite in Attacking.

2) Don’t ignore the mental trio

Determination, Level of Discipline, and Motivating still matter. Two coaches may both have 17 in a technical attribute, but the one with stronger mental staff attributes tends to produce better day-to-day training quality.

3) Keep workloads reasonable

Even world-class coaches can underperform with poor staffing balance. If too many players are crammed into one unit, the stars can drop. Spread units intelligently across your staff.

Quick interpretation guide

  • 4.5 - 5.0: Elite hire, ideal for top-tier clubs
  • 4.0 - 4.4: Excellent quality, strong first-team option
  • 3.5 - 3.9: Very good, reliable in most saves
  • 3.0 - 3.4: Solid, often fine for rotation units
  • 2.5 - 2.9: Decent, but upgrade when possible
  • Below 2.5: Developmental or emergency coverage

Hiring strategy tips

Prioritize specialist strength first

In most cases, the relevant technical coaching attribute provides the biggest bump. If your tactical coach is only 11 in Tactical but 17 in Motivating, you may still need to replace him for peak team growth.

Use assistants for balance

Sometimes your best hire is not the highest single star coach, but the one who improves two weak units and reduces overload. Think in terms of whole-staff optimization, not one superstar.

Re-check after squad changes

Promotions from youth teams, transfer windows, and injury-heavy periods change unit sizes. Recalculate every few months and adjust assignments.

FAQ

Is this an official in-game formula?

No. This is a practical estimate model designed for decision support. It reflects common weighting logic used by experienced FM players, but not every hidden game factor.

Can I use this for youth coaches?

Yes. The same principles apply: relevant coaching skill, strong mental profile, and manageable workload.

Why include players per coach?

Because training quality is not only about attribute numbers. If one unit is overloaded, your effective coaching impact drops. This adjustment helps you capture that reality quickly.
