Foal Adult Height Estimator
Use your foal's current age and height to estimate mature height. Add sire and dam heights for a more personalized estimate.
How this foal height calculator works
This calculator estimates your horse's mature height by combining two practical ideas used by breeders and owners:
- Growth-stage estimate: young horses reach a known percentage of their adult height at each age.
- Parent-height estimate: sire and dam height provide a useful genetic baseline.
The tool blends these two signals when parent data is entered. If parent heights are missing, it uses age-based growth alone.
Understanding horse height in hands
Horse height is typically measured in hands, where 1 hand = 4 inches (10.16 cm). Horse notation is written as H.I, where:
- H = full hands
- I = additional inches (0 to 3)
For example, 14.2 means 14 hands and 2 inches (not fourteen point two decimal hands).
Age-based growth percentages used in the estimate
Foals grow quickly in the first year and then gradually slow. The calculator uses interpolated growth percentages across months 0 to 48.
| Age | Approx. % of Mature Height |
|---|---|
| Birth | 60% |
| 6 months | 78% |
| 12 months | 88% |
| 18 months | 91% |
| 24 months | 94% |
| 30 months | 97% |
| 36 months | 98.5% |
| 48 months | 100% |
What affects adult horse height?
1) Genetics
Genetics are usually the strongest driver of mature size. Taller parent stock often produces taller offspring, though not always.
2) Nutrition and management
Balanced growth diets, parasite control, turnout, and overall health strongly influence whether a foal reaches its height potential.
3) Breed and bloodline patterns
Some breeds mature early, while others continue filling out and growing longer. Two foals of the same age can look very different depending on type and line.
4) Sex and maturation timing
Colts and fillies can mature at slightly different rates. This calculator includes a small sex adjustment when selected, but the effect is intentionally conservative.
How accurate is a foal height prediction?
This is an estimate, not a guarantee. In practice, accuracy improves with age:
- 0-6 months: broad estimate range
- 6-18 months: moderate confidence
- 18-36 months: usually closer to final height
- 36+ months: often near mature height
For important breeding or sales decisions, pair calculator results with periodic stick measurements and professional evaluation.
Best practices for measuring a foal correctly
- Measure on level ground.
- Use a proper horse measuring stick when possible.
- Measure at the highest point of the withers.
- Keep posture natural (not stretched or crouched).
- Repeat measurements and average them.
Frequently asked questions
Can this be used for ponies?
Yes. The same growth logic works, though accuracy depends on your input quality and bloodline consistency.
Do I have to enter sire and dam heights?
No. Parent heights are optional. They generally improve prediction when both are known.
Is this for weanlings, yearlings, and 2-year-olds?
Yes. The calculator supports ages from birth up to 48 months.
