Vimshottari Mahadasha Calculator (Free)

Enter your birth details, select your Moon nakshatra, and add how much of that nakshatra was completed at birth. The calculator estimates your Mahadasha timeline up to 120 years.

0 means the nakshatra just started; 50 means halfway complete; 100 means fully complete.

What is a dasha period?

In Vedic astrology, a dasha is a planetary time cycle. The most widely used system is Vimshottari Dasha, which divides 120 years into nine planetary rulership periods: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury. Each planet has a fixed duration and is believed to influence major life themes during its period.

How this free dasha calculator works

This calculator estimates your Mahadasha timeline from birth using:

  • Your birth date and optional birth time
  • Your birth nakshatra (where your Moon was placed)
  • The percentage of that nakshatra already completed at birth

From that information, it computes the balance of your first Mahadasha and then continues through the full sequence.

Why nakshatra progress matters

Your first dasha is not always a full planetary period. If your Moon was already deep into the birth nakshatra, the first Mahadasha is proportionally shorter. For example, if 75% of the nakshatra had already passed, only 25% of that Mahadasha remains at birth.

Vimshottari Mahadasha durations

  • Ketu: 7 years
  • Venus: 20 years
  • Sun: 6 years
  • Moon: 10 years
  • Mars: 7 years
  • Rahu: 18 years
  • Jupiter: 16 years
  • Saturn: 19 years
  • Mercury: 17 years

How to use this calculator correctly

Step 1: Find your Moon nakshatra

Use your Vedic birth chart to identify the Moon’s nakshatra. Accuracy depends on correct birth details and proper ayanamsha settings in your chart software.

Step 2: Find nakshatra completion percentage

You can derive this from Moon longitude within the nakshatra span. If unavailable, many astrology tools report dasha balance directly, which can be converted into percent.

Step 3: Generate and interpret timeline

After calculation, review start and end dates for each Mahadasha. Use these as timing windows for life chapters, then refine with Antardasha, transits, and house/lord analysis.

How to interpret each Mahadasha (quick guide)

  • Ketu: detachment, karmic pruning, spiritual reorientation.
  • Venus: relationships, comforts, creativity, values and enjoyment.
  • Sun: authority, identity, leadership, recognition, father themes.
  • Moon: emotions, family, home life, mental landscape.
  • Mars: action, discipline, conflict, initiative, technical force.
  • Rahu: ambition, worldly hunger, breakthroughs, unconventional paths.
  • Jupiter: expansion, teaching, wisdom, ethics, prosperity potential.
  • Saturn: structure, duty, endurance, realism, long-term maturity.
  • Mercury: learning, trade, communication, analysis, adaptability.

Important note on accuracy

This is a practical and educational free dasha calculator, not a full astronomical engine. It does not compute nakshatra from latitude/longitude directly; instead, it uses the nakshatra and progress values you provide. For professional-level timing, combine this timeline with a full Jyotish chart reading.
