gestational age by lmp calculator

Gestational Age by LMP Calculator

Use the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP) to estimate how far along the pregnancy is, your estimated due date (EDD), and trimester status.

Educational tool only. Clinical dating may be adjusted using ultrasound and provider assessment.

What is gestational age by LMP?

Gestational age by LMP is the most common early method for estimating pregnancy timing. It counts from the first day of your last menstrual period, not from the day of conception. Because ovulation usually happens about two weeks after LMP in a 28-day cycle, gestational age is usually about two weeks ahead of fetal age.

How this pregnancy calculator works

This calculator uses standard obstetric dating logic:

  • Gestational age: Days between the LMP date and the selected โ€œas ofโ€ date, converted to weeks and days.
  • Estimated due date (EDD): LMP + 280 days (40 weeks), with optional cycle-length adjustment.
  • Estimated conception date: Roughly LMP + (cycle length - 14 days).
  • Trimester: First (<14 weeks), second (14โ€“27 weeks), and third (28+ weeks).

Why LMP dating is widely used

LMP-based dating is simple, fast, and available at the first prenatal visit. It helps clinicians plan prenatal testing windows, monitor growth milestones, and estimate timing for delivery. In many cases, first-trimester ultrasound is then used to confirm or refine this estimate.

Common reasons dates can differ

  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Uncertain or forgotten LMP date
  • Recent hormonal contraception changes
  • Bleeding mistaken for a period
  • Ovulation earlier or later than average

How to use the calculator correctly

  1. Enter the first day of your last period.
  2. Set your typical cycle length (28 if unsure).
  3. Choose the date you want to calculate for (today by default).
  4. Click Calculate to see gestational age, EDD, trimester, and time remaining.

Understanding your result

If the result says 10 weeks 3 days, that means 73 days have passed since your LMP. This is the standard pregnancy timeline language used in clinics and ultrasound reports. The due date is an estimate, not a guarantee; spontaneous labor can naturally occur before or after that day.

LMP dating vs ultrasound dating

LMP dating is a strong starting point. However, early ultrasound (especially in the first trimester) often provides the most accurate gestational dating. If ultrasound and LMP differ by enough days, providers may update the official due date.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator show exactly when I conceived?

No. It provides an estimate. Conception date is approximate and depends on ovulation timing, sperm survival, and cycle variability.

Can cycle length change my due date?

Yes. Longer cycles often shift ovulation later, and shorter cycles can shift it earlier. This tool adjusts EDD relative to a 28-day cycle when you enter a different cycle length.

Is 40 weeks always the actual delivery day?

No. Full-term birth spans a range. Many healthy pregnancies deliver between 37 and 42 weeks, depending on individual factors and obstetric guidance.
